Shallow Spool Reels

Howdy,

I have noticed that many of the (japanese) reels coming out now come with a shallow spool option.

Personally, I can't really see the reasoning behind it - does it make the reel lighter ?

what are the pro's vs the obvious con of reduced line capacity ?

Dan

The shallow spools usually have a lighter more adjustable drag. This becomes an advantage when you are using very light lines or leaders eg 2lbs fluro. You may not be able to quite get the drag level you want with a standard 'non-finesse drag'. Some shallow spools also are ball bearing supported making them even smoother for those light lines.

Other shallow spool models also have a different finesse body which can make the reel significantly lighter eg high end daiwas.

The smaller line capacity is also not a con if you are fishing specifically for bream. I know I have never been into my backing despite catching some quite large bream and even bigger trevally. Of course if you start playing with pelagics and larger fish that changes things.

Your 2004/2506 are really specifically made shallow as they are for the likes of chasing breambos. You don't really need heaps of line on the reel so the shallow spool reels offer you the possiblity of not having to put backing onto the spool before you put your braided lines or if ou want to put straight spinning fluoro on them.

Obviously they have a lesser drag capacity but enough for oyster lease breaming.

I find personally that they are really for just breaming or the freshwater only versions only for bassing.

obviously top quality reels which are worth the value if you want a reel just specifically for breaming and bassing only.
