pflueger medalist
G’day guys!
What’s the goss on this reel. The assistant at the tackle shop said it has most of the features that the sustains & twin powers have. When I played around with the medalist 6040 & compared it with those reels in the 4000 size I was highly impressed. It’s smooth it’s suppose to lay line really good and comes with a good price tag. The only down side is the drag isn’t quite as strong those couple of Shimano’s. Does anyone else have any thoughts or has tested one themselves? Cheers! |

I was given a 6040 a while back Breamoholic. It doesnt see much use but thats only because I seldom use reels of this size atm.
From the little time I have spent with it, I think the reel's a little under rated. It is indeed pretty smooth, the drags pretty smooth and if in doubt of its stopping power, you could drop in set of Carbontex drags and voila...problem solved. I'd rate my Twinpowers over the Medalist but if u can get the Medalist at a top price, it'll be more than adequate. Only thing i cant testify for is the Medalist's longevity in the salt, havent used it enuff to help you there, sorry. Matt |

Yeah, the guy at the tackle shop said they'd have to be one of the most under rated reels on the market. It was on sale for $80 & I was thinking about replacing the sustain with something cheaper to save it getting scratched up on the rocks while spinning.
Cheers! |

Like the rods, it is an under-rated reel. The reel however, does go through cycles. Some of the them in batches are an average spool and thus spooling the reel can be a problem. They don't always spool very well. Then, on other occassions, you'll pick up one and spools quite nicely.
Overall, they are the typical good, solid middle-end market reel which suffices well for bream anglers. It is smoothe and has a good weight to balance most outfits. Drag capacity for bream is fine. It's a fine reel for subtle fishing without too much exertion as has been found a little wanting with some who've tried to push it as much as you can with the TD's. It's not advisable over the long term. If you can pick it up for that price, then it is a worthy buy.
