Looking good Rosco. Do you have a rod strap for the deck??

I played around with the idea of swapping props as I was getting around 5800 rpm at wot with two onboard, a few hundred rpm over the motors recomended max. and it would pull to 6k with just me onboard, not too good for longevity!
The other prob I wanted to get rid of was the excessive torque through the steering when tooling around near max speed with any amount of positive trim. I ended up going to a Solas AMITA 4 blader in the same (19 inch) pitch as the three blader I was running previously. The first run was a little disappointing with the rpm holding below 5000..... What to do? After consulting a prop expert I was recomended to raise the motor 2-3 inches. After some initial hesitation I took his advice..... The result??? Lifted 3 inches..... Abolutely no torque load on the steering! 9 knot increase in top speed! Much better bow lift with LESS trim. And best of all a 2-3 foot rooster tail!!!! Like it? No LOVE IT!!! Rossco

It has a horizontal rod rack along the port side and a vertical 3 rod holder each side next to the wells. I thought about modding the front of the console (read: cut a hole in it!) to allow the butt of two rods to sit into it for support and have shock cord strap for the front section on the deck.... decided against it after spending some time on the water.

Nice one Rossco
Nothing beats a nice rooster tail! Ever thought of a small jack plate? This will let you adjust it your sef and you can change it for summer and winter as they run differently in warm and cold. Greg |

Rosco, have a chat to Mullet as well. He had a few prop torque issues and actually went for a BLA prop that fixed the prob. He fiddled with the Solas props and they didn't really help the issue.
HTH.

I toyed with the jack plate idea but decided against it, partly because I don't want go any higher and come across cooling water pressure issues, secondly it's only a 90 and there is no pad on the hull so i can't see it going much harder than it is now.

If it was still torquing heaps now I'd probably switch the steering gear over to one of the nonfeedback types (I like the speed!).

Everything they say is true.
Sacrifice getting out of the hole, for top end speed - check. If you want to fly out of the hole, dont get the smaller prop - check Learning to trim the engine - gets good fuel savings- check. Running at WOT dramatically increases the amount of juice being sucked. And I mean dramatically. With the large outboards - the feul consumption over an hour begins to hit home. 55 litres per hour EG. the boys call and say get over here - the ###### are going nuts. At WOT that doesnt amount to much. But if you miss 3 hot bights in a day you can cover over 100kms a day and there isnt much room left in the tank to get home. |

2. Repropping to REDUCE wot RPM - Check Sacrificing the hole shot? - NOPE (0 -25 knots in 8 seconds) - higher top speed YES (BONUS!!) 3.Higher cruise speed (3500 rpm) resulting in BETTER ecomony (Smaller prop? My Yamaha is rated to 5500 rpm I was running 5800 with the three blade) - CHECK Running at wide open throttle has an effect on fuel consumption............do ya think??!!?? I run a 90 hp max consumption is listed as 35 litres per hour by yamaha........I've not yet seen more than approx 10 - 15 per hour........and yes I do drive flatout where I legally can on the Swan. Yellowdoor1 not appearing to understand what I was trying to achieve (reduction in Wot rpm, less torque at the helm AND BETTER EFFICIENCY!!)- CHECKMATE!! (All tongue in cheek of course )
