crystal fireline!!!
hi all,
how good is the new crystal fireline!! that came out last week. it comes in the new sizes of 1,2 and 3Lb and in 4,6,8,10,14and 20Lb and the 1Lb is only 1/4 of a pound thickness! it is smoother and is only a few more dollars more the the original fireline! i got some this week and it is great the 1Lb is way stronger then 1Lb, pretty strong!! the only thing is that you cant see the taps of fish as it is clean. i would like to know what others think if they are using it. i think it will be a craze cheers breambros daniel

The smooth handling superline. Advanced technology FireLine is now 20 percent stronger than before. This thermal filament casts more easily, ties better knots, and stays more hassle-free than conventional braids. Along with exceptional strength, FireLine delivers ultimate sensitivity for instant feel, and the ultrathin diameter provides low visibility and incredible lure action.

you only saw it in stores last week? Wow, that took a little while where you are then. It's been out for about a month now here in QLD.
I've looked at it. It's impressive line I will admit. To me, it'll be like fishing straight fluorocarbon cos ya can't see the ruddy thing. But, that's little concern to me considering I'm fishing 2lb straight fluorocarb at the moment. Yes, the poundage rating is very good and correlates nicely to normal fireline and slightly better. There's been interesting discussions of what it is, whethere it's just stretched normal fireline or woven and fused fireline to give more strength, or just fireline colourless. Whichever the theory rings true, i may try it out to see how it feels. So far, it feels good in the hand. Oh just a question....... anyone who uses bass hard linesystem have any problems with the breaking strain. Cos so far...... IT SUX! 8lb breaking at 4lb, 6lb breaking at 2lb. What's the deal here! Bad batch, or just brittle if sat in the hot warehouse for too long or just not good? So far, I've given it away, a mate of mine has as well, and tested a bunch of it, and it's been depressing. And a few more have had deals of problems with it too. Just interested to know. And sorry for changing the thread stream a little.

And i did, im actually spooling it up at the minute. I got the 2lb as 1lb and bream just sounds too scary for my liking. I deffenetly see a purpose for it but im yet to really test is strength and i dunno if i would use more often then the green due to the visibillity but im deffenetly gonna get it out on the trout for straight retrieves etc when you dont need to see your line..
What did you think of the knot strength breambros? My first knot busted the fireline on a uni to uni knot on 6lb leader and was kinda hoping it would be a bit stronger then 6lb...

It'd be a bummer to try and work out required the length of backing you need for these 1 or 2 lb Crystal Fireline on your 1500 or 2000 size reels.. At the moment I have figured out the backing for normal Fireline. On a Daiwa 1500, you can spool on normal Fireline in 125yd spool with only about 2-3 metres of mono backing and for 2000 size spool the 6 pound in the older 150yd pink fireline spool fits just nice with less than a metre of backing for gripping the spool. Now with these new 1 or 2 lb firelines, you're going to need much more backing.

Is 2lb really necessary? Sounds like a frightening idea in and around snags...Could get very pricey.
To follow on Chunqx's concerns about the length of backing, I'd be worried about such fine diameter braid actually cutting into/between the backing... kamikazeghost, fishing with 2lb fluorocarbon mainline around Queensland? Must make things rather interesting? Do you have a heavier outfit onboard too, or do you just get by on the light stuff? Just thinking, a jack'd probably break you off on the strike with line that light?

Ive been using the new crystal fireline for a couple of weeks on squire, im using the 6lb and find it very good, knot tied is uni to uni with braid doubled, i did snap the lione on thursday when i was pulling line under drag to get some slack and it made me think oh oh, but im hoping it was knicked from reef or something, anyway this was berkleys last chance for me as im sick of paying 24 bucks for fireline and getting a bad spool that keeps on breaking like cotton when you tie a leader, it was getting as though 50% of spools wouldnt hold a knot.

In general, the diameter ratio between braid and mono of the same breaking strain is about 1:3, so you'd get approximately 3 times as much braid on the reel as mono of the same pound rating.
Easiest way is to determine how much braid you want on the reel. With the braid, if you are not fishing at extreme distance or likely to hook drag burning finsters, then you can cut the 125/150 yd spool in half and get more use out of it. If you want the full spool, then by all means do so. You'll then need the spare spool. Load the braid on first, packing it nice and tight, then tie on the backing and fill the spool to a couple of millimetres below the spool rim. Then take off the spare and load the line onto your main spool, backing first, from the spare. Should fill up nicely. 2 lb would make any lure absolutely fly, but I wouldn't pit it against any structure, no matter how much it breaks at. Any abrasion puts paid to your chances of landing a hooked fish, and you'll end up losing a lot of line. |

Im a bit against fishing that light amongst structure for sure. Maybe the 2lb would be really good for flats fishing with hb's where there is no snag withing a few hundred metres, but still i think there are better braids around than 1lb and 2lb fireline, especially when regular fishing around pylons, rocks and submerged timber.

2lb fireline is fine.......... use 2lb straight fluorocarbon..... that's getting scary. But, no problems as I used to use it 3 yrs ago.
So 2lb fireline....... no problemo. you've got more than what you think in terms of give if your rod position is correct and drag setting is correct. Fish a lighter drag is the definite go. Sure, it's a little tough around heavy structured areas, but, it works nicely. I can't be bothered getting any though. I still have good normal original fireline that doesn't need changing at all. I don't see the point just cos there's something new on the market.

I bought a spool of 2 lb crystal fineline yesterday and tried it on squire this morning as most were smallish 30-35 and its so sweet to use, with my little stradic and pflueger is was like fishing with silk, and knots are all good so far.
I use the 6lb crystal with my symetre and 7ft2 2-4kg dropshot for squire and find it very good, this is same gear i caught 81cm tuna on, this is best squire from 18 caught this morning, he went 45.
