Thumbs down TD sol problem

hey guys
i bought my 2000 sol last december and its been fairly heavily used since and in the last few months an internal vibration has appeared. its noticable through the handle when cranking quickly and is starting to drive me insane mostly just because i know its there. at first i thought it was the machined handle but ive swapped handles with a few other reels and it can still be felt. the reel is well oiled and washed after every use and apart from a few accedental dunkings in freshwater has been well looked after. imo these sort of minor problems should not be present in a $300+ reel after 6-7 months.
any ideas on what the problem could be and how to fix it?
cheers
luke

my suggestion is dont do anything more to the reel and take it back to your dealer to help you out.

A few freshwater dunkings?

No reel is designed to be water proof- the new drags yes- but not everything else.

No doubt i'd say water has got into one of the bearings and its running dry, possibly with a bit of corrosion on it.

Just last week i helped pull apart my grandfathers large daiwa spinning reel and explaining to him why it was making a funny noise after it got dunked a week before. He said he would just send it back on warranty, but sadly enough, reels aren't warranted against immersion in water. They can take a spray when they are being cleaned but dunking them is a big killer of reels.

9 bearings apart, cleaned, dried and repacked with grease later (and one still partly seized), his reel works- yes so he can use it on the rest of his holiday- but not very well. Now he has to send it away to get fixed properly.

Get it to your nearest service place asap and get them to service it and give it a good GREASE up. It may also help to get a thin amount of grease on the panel when they go back on to help avoid moisture getting back in.

Hope that helps

exacly right brad
as being a service assistant in the repairs section of our reel department NO reel should be exposed to any water as such.... as brad said it effects the bearings because water can get in but cant get out.. i guarantee that if you open your reel you will have rusty water dripping out... so whatever store you bring it back to make sure they have a good quality grease like johns devits mix and use Tournament casting oil on you main gear bearings than it will run like sex in a reel....
so in future a wet rag and a light inox spray does the reel better then a dunking

Sol 2000

Guys I agree with what's been said about dunking reels, but I also have a 2000 Sol that is only about 3months old maybe even less and it also has a similar vibration / knocking noise. I Never submerge my reels and am very careful when cleaning them not to get excessive water on them. I have a Certate and Kaldia Kix and these don't have the noise. I just thought it was the feel of the reel as some are different than others but it's interesting you have the same issue Luke H. I didn't want to take it back to my local shop as I thought I was being anal about it but I will reconsider that now! Like you said Luke H it's not that drastic enough to stop you using the reel but it is a rather annoying feel for a reel of this calibre.

Was gonna sell my Caldia Kix then it started to behave the same as Luke H described. Its never had a dunking and is always wiped and sprayed. Started feeling vibration and was noisy when winding at speed. But for some reason its ok now.

thanks guys
i understand about the dunking thing, the reel actually went in the river for no more than a couple of seconds. i opened it up when i got home after that day and lubricated the internals and no moisture was present, by no means do i dunk my reel while cleaning or anything like that. i honostly dont think thats the problem because that happened in january sometime and the problem only started in april-may so id say if it was going to rust from that it wouldnt have taken 2 months to do so. i work at a tackle store so its no problem to send it back to daiwa and seeing as theres a few other people with the same problem i think il definately be sending it back. could it be the alignment of the gears is off slightly after alot of use? with the digigear design they are supposedly prescision aligned so if one is slightly out of place a problem like this could arise couldnt it?
thanks again
luke

Sol 2000

Luke that's exactly what I think mine is as well, mis-alignment of gears, it just seems to rough for something that has 6 plus bearings! Let me know what Daiwa comes back with, will be interesting to hear their view.

I've had my 2000 and 2500 for about 2 months now, and haven't had a problem yet... *fingers crossed*

The only thing I've found is I get a weird sound from the 2500 under load and when winding in quickly... but I've just been told that's the fireline making that noise.

Hope you get it all sorted Luke, and tell us what it was.

Cheers

I know you've probably checked it out but just in case you havent

When my reel makes noise under load, its the line roller on the bail arm, screaming out for lube. I originally thought it was much more serious.

I like using it for pinkies though - it makes the runs sound meaner than they actually are.

Like yellow door said

Reel with no pressure and see if it makes a noise

I have had a sol for a while now....Its not my most used reel BUT i don't wash mine out No issues at all.

If it does seem like the roller bairing take the bearing out and give it a clean.

I'll crack it open sometime in the next week. It's fine 90% of the time... The sound only comes up sometimes.

Thanks for the advice fellas, I think it might be the line roller bearing like you said.

Cheers

If you want to do a quick check and dont want to take it apart

Small squirt of wd40 on the line roller
Get a length of line and run it under the roller
Hold one end of the line in left hand and other in the right

Then give it an back and forth "shoe shine" motion. I think its clear what I mean. If not - theres a pic below which might help

Keep tension on the line to make sure the roller is rolling

P.S. this is a quick fix - Pat's way is the right way

if your reel is making a noise when winding under pressure but not when winding in slack......then its probably your line roller thats rusted.

You'll be surprised how much water passes thru your line roller everytime U wind. It comes from your braid as braid can carry abit of water. Best to rinse that area out everytime and oil it up frequently. There's no such thing as fully rust proof bearings....they can only minimise rust by coating the bearings with chemicals.

Just make sure the spool is off the reel or you get wd40 smelling line and not many fish next time you go fishing
