Backing? What to use?
Hi Guys,
Just picked up a new rod last night, so had to get a new reel with it too I was just wondering what people use for backing? Last reel I got I had the dudes at the shop spool it for me and it cost a fortune. I have some Platy braid, 2lb I think, just wondering what would be best. I used to use 6lb mono, got crap loads of it lying around, but the knot between braid and backing always snagged line during casts. Does the diameter of the backing need to try and match the braid? I run my braid into the ground so dont generally have to spool up alot ![]() Cheers Shane |

the 6lb should be fine shane just put a little bit of sticky tape on the spool where the join is, then spool the rest of the braid over the top that way the join knot won't snag up. I just use 8lb vanish as backing usually.

I see what you now mean Shane. I use a low profile knot and probably don't use as much backing and therefore more braid. I never let it get low enough to get near the join knot.

i tend to go with the "what if" theory for backing .....
it would be fair to say that it doesn't realy matter what backing you use because most likely it will never see the light of day but after seeing a few hard running fish caight (giant herring mullaway etc) the "what if" starts to count. "what if" you hook up the hard running fish of a life time which takes you into the backing ...... then i would realy like something of decent quality under the braid (or fly line for that matter) a few of my reels still have "cheap" mono backing, but as i relace the braid i have been switching over to 6lb fluro and taking a lot of care with the knott just incase the "what if" fish comes along... JMO brad edit - have not run into porblems with the knott catching yet either as i tend to change the braid before it gets that low. |

I dont think that the knot is catching due to braid getting low but due to the knot working it's way up with large casts and the braid relaying. Cheers for the info guys, I think I have some platy 8lb mono which has a smaller diameter than my 6lb fluro so I will use that.
Cheers for all the input. |

I like the Tape idea, cover the knot with tape and then if a fish brings you down to the backing the tape would just come off if you only do one circle of it and it doesnt completely meet up but then it might end up getting stuck in the roller and making the drag fail if you do reach it....

an albrite knot should do the job shane they are one of the smallest and strongest knots around
try some vanish from 8-12lb backing cause u never know if u wanna use it for pinkies or somthing like that |

So Shane what new rod & reel did you get? Want to sell a reel?
I agree with Luke, albright knot is the smallest and the neatest for going through rod guides. I don't think one can really say reel may be low in braid, guess it depends on how much backing one uses. I just use a whole pack of braid (125yds) and the rest is backing. I used to use double uni to join the backing and had the same problem. I just use any mono I have lying around (either 8lb or 10 lb) and don't like the idea of wasting flurocarbon on backing.
