Suitable Rod for donging snapper with Big plastics
Hi all. I know this is a bream site but you guys are at the cutting edge of angling so you may have some idea's and comments.
I enjoy tossing big rubbers at Pinkies in shallow water. I currently fish a Daiwa procaster spin (8-16lb I think) but want to upgrade to a nicer feeling rod. I have hunted through all the rod catelogues for a snapper stik but they are all 7 footers. Now I fish a seven footer for bream but I'm looking for a shorter beefer faster rod... in the 6' - 6'6" range as I fish from boats and 7fters are a pain. Up to 7kg should do the job.... them pink bream can get very angry at times Any suggestions????? Or will I have to roll one up myself....any suggestions on blanks?????? Rod will be matched with a Capricorn 2500 or 4500 (I have both already) Thanks in advance

Geoff Roberts (formerlly Paulic) has an awesome Loomis which I think would be perfect. I'll ask him next time I speak to him for you. His is matched with a Certate, maybe slightly larger than what your looking at, but believe me it is incredible.

I`ll have to get Bear to dig out his 6'6" 4-7kg crankbait, one of the nicest feeling rods Ive come across. Comes in 7ft as well.

If your after an off the shelf rod check out the Nitro Magnum butt. Its 7'6'' 4-6kg if im correct (check out the website) and is hell sexy
For $300 you just cant go wrong. If you want to spend a little more check out the Battler range. #$&@#$&@#$&@#$&@ hot rods with the best of the best bits. They have a fairly large range so there might be something in there for you. Battlers retail around $500 Maybe even think about a custom.... cheers, Nathan

4-7kg CPlus Crankbait. Spin or cast, ideal for sure. If Cindy still does them, then the Pelagic would be another good choice.

Hi Salmo,
I have a few options for you, including some fast action 6'6 rods. Drop me a note and I can go over the options. One rod is an Overlander 6'6 4-7kg fast action can be made in spin or cast. Which are you after? Cheers, Cindy Black Diamond Tailored Rods Pty Ltd |

Cindy,
I like it how you're always on the go in the promotion and PR of the Black Diamond Rods. It's classical. Salmo, how shallow you fishing?? And, how big are these snapper? I do it all the time up here in QLD catching snapper in shallow reefs of only around 5-10m. The snapper are not the huge 5-8kg nobbies, but always around the 1-3kg mark from average 45-70cm range. I use my breambo gear believe it or not. I use Seagake 6'10" 4-6lb matched to TDS spooled with 4lb line and use 8lb leader. It is exhilarating sportfishing, which is a little extreme, but I have great success and fun. I do release alot of them also. Do I get smoked by some big ones? I sure do, but it doesn't stop me from using the same gear. So, you can fish very light on them, but I guess it'll depend on what you want from it. Maybe you're not fishing as shallow as I am and the fish are bigger. Then, sure, I'd upgrade to 4-7kg rods. For that I'm using a HL-Z Cheetah with Daiwa Advantage spooled with 16lb braid line. Happy Fishing

I think one of the main reasons for the bigger rod here is the bycatch of big angry samsons and the like...sure you can land a good size pinkieon the bream gear, but when the sambos come around you want somehting with a bit more balls.

Agree........ but no sambos in that shallow for me. Just the schools of mack trucks up to 3kg, which I still use my breambo gear.

I had a gooood look at it today, and I think i'm going to get one in the next month or so to chase the bigger pinks. There's another model, which is like 6-8 kg, but only about 7' / 7'2" not exactly sure, but it felt a bit too stiff. The Magnum Butt is aweeeesome Not sure what reel to put on it. Nothing toooooo exxy... was thinking a 4000 Caldia Kix to go with my 2500 ![]() Cheers |
