suspend, float or sink

After the Albany round I was curious to see what the best style of hard body lure has been around the tracks.

I must admit, I have done fairly well on the Attack and the Oarg in Gold, both of which are floaters.

How has everyone else gone?

G`Day Bear,

Nailed both of mine on the sinking scorpion in the gold orange back, I preferred the sinking to the suspending as you could allow it to sink a couple of feet before starting the retrieve. But then again I reckon I would have had a few more hits on a suspending scorp as the Bream seemed to get spooked by the sinking maybe cause of more metal bits on the lure???. Unsure on that one. Gotta have em both I reckon..... Im just about to pick up another plano box just for hard bodies, after picking up 3 new Oar G`s and 2 attacks on the weekend, Im starting to feel a lot more complete, gotta get more though.

Cheers

Richo

Bear, my most recent success has been on the Oargee JG. Probably a better guide is Geoff Spadaccini's form at Kalgan. He was using a sneaky scorpion in the gold/orange back colour and doing quite nicely thank you very much.

Sneaky Scorpions

The Sneaky Scorpions certainly worked well in the Kalgan. On the first day of the tournament I started using a Salt Water Assassin shad and picked up one bream on that but after watching my boater Craig Campbell get hit after hit on the Sneaky Scorpion (Gold), I changed over to my scorpion (floating, in the Fire Fin colour) and managed 3 bream on that. Considering I caught my first bream on a hardbody during the comp was also a highlight...great weekend allround!

Anyone been having any luck recently in the Swan using the Scorpions??

Cheers..

Mitch, I reckon I had everything in my box except a gold sneaky. With about 5 minutes to go I tried a fluro pink (after having tried everything else) which produced an immediate hit.

I was out with a mate of mine Thurs arvo late and after an incredibly unproductive session he tied on a silvery coloured sneaky. First cast produced a 23 cm tailor, our only fish for the session. Not much else to report on those.

Regards

We have sold ten times the amount of Sneaky's in the Chrome Gold to any other colour. On the first day at Albany when I was doing the presentations, every second person had used a Gold Scorpion whether it was suspending (sneaky) or sinking.

I used nothing but an Oargee all weekend (Taro pinched my only Gold Scorp on Saturday....Oh yeh right, just add it to my sponsorship gear.. ).

The JG was a big success with a one fish being caught on the gold and the BR (Matt Fraser's favourite).

It is definately an awesome lure. I think if you took a Gold Scorp and a JG Oargee, you would do well.

I was having a lot of success on Yo Zuri Snap Shads in the 40mm version in black & gold & Sneaky Scorpions in orange & gold before the bream went slow. Any one else tried the Yo Zuri's?

I lost one a couple of weeks back - they've been a bit hard to track down and get more.

If you're wondering what Ravin is talking about:

Not a bad little lure - and priced well too!

I nailed all mine except two on the YoZuri Snap Shad - which I fitted with new hooks until it suspended. I caught my others on a modified sinking 35 - using Owner ultralight trebles - which SNAPPED on a big bream! Suspend is the way to go unless you want to work the lure fast in snaggy country... which was kinda the case in Albany with those hungry bream. Then floating lures are great for climbing over snags at speed...

Hi there,
I have been useing the mini micro mullets in the white silver (mullet colour) and the bream seem to love them. a couple of weeks ago the suspends in the blue back yellow under neath colour worked a charm. I think the action of the suspends rather than the colour is what makes then a great lure. they dive quick and swim at the slowest retreive. they almost swim standing still!!! fishing down here into snags and rock piles its the first two metres that count so it has to dive quick and stay in the strike zone for as long as possible.
cheers, steve.

Bear,

Thursday prior to the Albany comp I used an orgee lil ripper jg. I picked up a 40.41,33,32 and a 30cm bream plus a 52cm mulloway. A fantastic morning, you could see the bream hit the lure in a couple of inches of water.

Come saturday the bream seemed to go deep and the jg didn,t work
so good. Allthough I did catch one.

John.

Strange you should say that John - I caught all my comp bream in less than 40cm of water... all hit a shallow running hardbody right on the surface. Didn't catch a single one in the deeper water...

Yeah I reckon my fish were nailed in 50cm max of water - within the first or second twitch usually. But John it would have been pretty hard to match the Thursday you had before the comp, 5 fish 30cm+ and a mully as well - Nice work - I`d have been rapped, and the look on your face said the weekend was a success before the comp even started.

And we all have you to thank for putting us all onto Hards for the comp. I know I would have wasted the whole first day on Softs (wasted - Im not sure, but a heck of a lot of time anyway). But I can now say, you gotta love m all, gotta be prepared to use both.

Cheers

Richo

hi guys
I use the yo-zuri snap shad gold/black quite a bit with moderate success. That was until i remembered to pack a red nikko pen in the tackle box. I drew on some lines you see on larger mackeral lures and bingo!!! The difference was amazing.
I have also tried using black nikko pens without much success. Seems that red on a gold body really makes a big difference with bream trevally and whiting on those lures.
Although it should be said that when up in the northern waters you should be careful with what you present this lure to.........4lb mono line and a 26lb barra sure puts a lot of stress on things That barra took the lure as i was retrieving it during a trevally session that was hot!! After a 40 minute battle and some 600mtrs chasing it down the river on foot in up to five feet of water i finally got that fish to the shore and beached it on the other side of the creek from where i started from. All my fishing buddy could do was laugh as he watched me tripping/racing/wading/swearing and woohooing until he saw what i had on........... heheh that last laugh was with me!!!!
But seriously don't be afraid to use a red nikko pen on a gold lure it's dynamite!!!!
