Redfin catch and release or catch and destroy

Your comments on this and reasons why

I was under the belief that Redfin are a threat to Marron stocks in WA and we should always catch and kill them.

It is recommended by fisheries that redfin are not released back into the systems they are caught from. That is what we encourage in the FW series and is does seem to have made a difference to the Harvey Dam.

Depends where you live i spose, here in victoria i let all my redfin go but in saying that i only fish places where they are the only real fish around other then tench carp and trout. You could argue that they eat the younge trout but most trout released here arent tiny so they dont pose much of a threat to anything other then carp or tench breeding.

They may reduce trout numbers due to competition for food but i dont think thats a big issue around here to be honost.

If i knew they were impacting on natives i would probebly kill them but i find it hard to kill any fish nowerdays.

Even carp...

C&R for me too
same story as dagga, where we fish the river only contains introduced species like redfin, carp, tench, mozzie fish and the occasional trout. so releasing them doesnt do harm to any natives. no stunting has occured in the redfin and i think its a fairly healthy area despite being filled with introduced fish, they seem to level each other out in my opinion

ducks
the only native species in that part of the river are eels and lamprey, both seem to be doing well so i see no problem in releasing redfin

I agree nath, but that should include trout and im not being sarcastic.

Fare enough redfin dont belong here but nether do trout and i can tell you now that there would be no fishing down my way without redfin because the trout fishing is I'm an idiotI'm an idiotI'm an idiotI'm an idiote and we dont have natives other then gudgeons and eels, redfin eat gudgeons which are natives but i can honostly say the amount of gudgeons we see around here is crazy at night time under a spot light.

And tell me this, if we got rid of trout, carp, tench, roach and redfin from waters around victoria, imparticular around the ballarat region which is what i know first hand, what fish would we actually have? other then maybe black fish in some rivers and creeks.

I dont think they should be here but i wouldnt be fishing if it wasnt for them but i would chose natives any day of the week but we arent aloud to stock them around here.....

I understand redfin can be very territorial and kinda stress other fish if they are confined too close to eachother but i dont think the trout are dying due to the redfin populations, its the over fishing and low water levels/warmer water in the local area.

We had a lake litrally easy walking distance from my house but its turned into a puddle, we did fish it to the point where we were sight casting to carp with lures because the trout dissapeared due to the water levels and heat.

Also the trout that get released here are yearlings so it would take alot of big redfin to wipe them out.....

By the way, redfin taste great and i personally dont like eating fish but i do like the taste of redfin any day.

People often say they are better then king george whiting.....

Have to agree with you on the reddies

No way known i'll put one back into the river or lake

no sir re , straight home to the pan for them

unless there small , then they go back to grow bigger , the best fight from an introduced fish i have caught to date.

Thumbs up Both!

Eat em for sure - fillet off the skin deep fry in breadcrumbs add salt and lemon to taste - even a little seafood sauce or tartare - they are bloody great!! Best eatin freshwater fish bar non!
Leave trout for dead as far as eating goes!

Depends onthe water is my response to C & R Or C & E.

Starlo copped this on his Pemberton fishing segment with Frank Prokop! Back home - with a few 3 pound + fish that he didn't have the ability to keep to eat due to travel & filming committments he let em go back into the Warren River!

Everyone went nutso and wanted to lynch him!

Warren River reddies are probably the biggest in the country!

How do you justify wateing a sportfish resource like that?

But

In some lake they over breed, over stock & stunt!

I that situation keep ever one you catch and bury em under the lemon tree ort use em for crab bait!

Even stock 5 year old big brood stock browns that can swallow the stunted runted redfins whole!

Theres a way round everything if you look and how you treat the resource should reflect the situation or need in that bit of water!

cheers!
