Catch Your First Bream

Hi all, i have recently just joined this website and i have enjoyed reading the info in the forums for about 2 months. I have never caught a bream on a lure of any description and have probably put in about 30 solid hours trying to catch them around the melbourne area. I have tried lures such as the berkley power minnow in prl/watermelon, storm live nipper plastics, squidgy wrigglers and a few halco scorpion 35 in the FireFin and brown trount. I was just wondering as to if you guys could give me some help by telling me what to look for, whether the tides make a difference, colour of the water, what colour lure to use in certain colours of water and maybe suggest a lure or even a spot were im likely to hook up around melbourne. Any info would be greatly appriciated
Thanks Ozbreamer

Well... I'm in the same league with you guys... so far got 3.5 breams with (reatively) big time intervals between them. Only one (the last one) has been caught using "conventional" breaming approach... the other 2 were just casting the lure straight into the stream.

Buy "half bream" I mean something that looked like a cross between bream and snapper (what the hell was that - still wondering).

So I guess the issue is not to just catch a sibgle bream... but somehow to learn to do it more or less consistently. (Sigh) Wish some day I'll be there...

Once i caught my first bream i caught 2 more the next day so for me it has become alot easier . This site is loaded with info on catching bream and its how i learned. Just ask people for certain info if you need it and they are always happy to help. I caught my bream with 3inch pearl watermelon and 2inch smelt bassminnows. I think that when you do fish just keep in mind that bream love structure and like to stay out of the sun, so spots that have a bit of shade and structure..etc often produce the goods also fish your SPs SLOW. Now im no pro at this but this is some of what i have learnt from this site. You might get a lot better help from more experienced people on this site.....JMO

mate dont know what type of lure your using but try using a 1/8 head and berkley minnows in smelt scales, fish it near the bottom and give it 2 subtle jerks of around 20cm and a few smaller nudges and let it settle before repeating, and remember its no use if the bream are not there, i find if there is no action it means no fish are there, bream move around a fair bit. ps!!! try running the line through the first 2 fingers on hand holding the rod in front of reel, this lets you feel every touch and you never get loops.

Took me ages to get my first bream too but when I finally did I started catching them almost everytime I went out.

Keep trying and you'll eventually get them

Already rigged a 1/8 bullet head on my rod

As per berkley minnows in smelt scales - thought they do not do them anymore... or do you mean gulp?

Thanks for the tip - will try tomorrow.

You should be able to buy standard 3inch minnows, we can here in qld, kruz you will read lots on here about using all sorts of exotic plastics for bream, plastic crabs ect, try just keeping it simple and become proficient first, just use the minnows or 2inch grubs, i like the culprit swim fin grubs in white or a colour close to bloodworm ( get em at bigW), use the minnows as i suggested and with the grubs just use slower 20 cm pulls off the bottom with the odd little nudge, if you feel a touch slow it down a tad till strike.

I had endless trips without catching and its getting better every time now. After the first one you'll spend every cent you have trying for others though

My very first took about an hour...

The next one? Uh...About 9 months I think...You think going 30 hours without a fish is bad? I lost count of the no. of hours I went fishless before finally getting consistent results on the bream.

Most of my trips were full of walking and clambering about...

Don't sweat it if it takes a while, most fish take a bit of working out, and it just so happens that bream are rather fussier than most, so keep at it, and when you do catch them consistently, you'll know that you've started fooling one of the harder species you can catch on a lure.
