Yamaha 2 st, 40 HP

Hi all,
I just bought a brand new Yammie, Model 40 VMHDL.
The dealer said that after a run-in on the oil/fuel mix of 25:1, I should run it on 100:1 mix. The Yamaha manual tells me to run-in on 25:1 and then on 50:1.
To make things more confusing, the Yamaha website for the same group of mid range engines refers to both 100:1 and 50:1! Who is right?
I think I should stick with what the manual says. But I am a bit dissapointed as I always thought that those engines are running on 100:1 and better for the environment
BTW, does anyone know a good outboard mechanic in Melb?
Thanks
Alex

Hi Alex

I think that you will find that Yamaha recommend you use Yamalube at 100:1 It is their propiety 2 Stroke oil and is very good. Other TCW-3 oils like Shell Nautilus from the local servo will be recommended to be mixed at 50:1. Yamaha are just making sure you don't destroy the engine by running an inferior oil at 100:1. As the old Castrol ad said: "oils ain't oils"

I'm running in the same motor at the moment as well.
It's getting 50:1 for the running in period and 100:1 once the running in is over.
The 40hp Enduro Yammy runs a 25:1 run in, and 50:1 normally so maybe the guy got a little confused?

I'm also running the same motor & was disappointed to learn that it has to run at 50:1. I use Yamalube oil & it does blow a bit of smoke when idling & at low rpm. I enquired about the oil/fuel ratio & all non oil injected Yamaha 2 strokes 30HP & under run at 100:1 & 40HP & above run at 50:1. I'm going to leave mine at 50:1, being a mechanic by trade & seeing 2 strokes seize when I used to race motocross makes a horrible expensive mess. It doesn't make any difference what brand oil you use as long as its rated TCW-3, Yamalube is probably made by another oil company anyway, I know Toyota motor oil is made by Caltex. If your motor is damaged or seizes & you try & make a warranty claim through Yamaha, they will know it was caused by lack of lubrication. If I was tempted to run at a leaner mixture I'd try 75:1 & see how that went.

Hi Tymo

I just had a look at the specs for that motor and sure enough they recommend 50:1 I was unaware of that being the case with that range. The 30 runs at 100:1 and is a couple of hundred cc's smaller. I guess they probably leaned off the fuel on the larger motors so they stick to 50:1 to be safe.

Thanks for all the replies, guys.
Initially I have ordered 30 HP, and it was 100:1. Later, I upgraded it to 40HP, assuming it also runs at 100:1.
Anyway, it's too late to change it to oil injected now.
ANyone can recommend a good mech in Melb?
Cheers,
Alex
