Holiday snaps

Just got back from the family holiday up to Noosa, so I thought I'd do a quick report.

The first outing was a morning trip to a well-known location land based. There was plenty of action on the surface, but the only fish landed was what looked to me like a small Queenfish (sorry, no pic). Taken using a R2S "Sea Rock 7", which is a very small coloured metal slug. Those things can be cast an absolute mile with bream gear.

You could say we got a few bites...damn those sand flies.

Next trip out was under a bridge looking for Bream, Jacks or anything else hanging around. We only caught a few "junk" fish however. There are a few "fish ID required" shots here, this is the first.

This one looks like some kind of cod (rock/estuary?). This one was landed by my brother-in-law. I had caught a much smaller one earlier, what a crappy way to christen the new Luvius

"Poppers" the man said, so we headed off to another spot one evening. After once seeing a huge "boil" created as a fish (unseen) turned just behind the popper I was using right at the waters edge, I had the first glimpse of a decent fish. Retrieving a popper, a Tailor of at least 60cm misjudged the attack, and jumped out of the water right in front of it, cutting the 12lb leader instantly and barely bothering the rod tip. Still, it was the best millisecond fight I've had.

Next morning, I was back at that spot, poppers at the ready. Early morning was the go, and there were two schools of baitfish being harrassed within casting distance - "funny water". There were so many times that fish skipped across the surface, or jumped in all directions, sometimes right at my feet, it just wasn't funny. No luck this session however. Also gave the plastics a go. Managed to hook up with something decent, probably a Trevally, but the hooks pulled due to the drag being too tight...lesson learned.

Plenty of flyrodders out early in the morning too. I saw at least 3 different blokes, and I'm not the only crazy one hitting the water at 4:15am (first light).

Had some follows from some interesting fish too. Three very long skinny fish followed a plastic in a couple of times. I'm guessing these were Long Toms or something. Also had the tail of a plastic tugged by some small garfish of about 3cm longer than it...made me laugh.

A couple more fruitless trips and we succumbed to a bait session. We grabbed a hire boat and headed to the first spot mentioned. First fish on a prawn was just a little bit unexpected. Can't be sure but I think it's a Remora. It had this "pad" thing on top of its head.

Ahhh, so that's what a bream looks like (its been a while). I dropped a decent one of around 30cm at the boat due to a shoddy knot

Nice whiting, this one went 35cm. Pic makes it looks small.

I think they call the big ones "elbow slappers".

These fellas regularly cruise the banks morning and evening. I wish I took a pic of the leopard skin one, it was very pretty. I had to be careful not to accidentally hook them sometimes. Once when I was retrieving a HB, a stingray cruised past and I thought nothing of it. When the HB came in, there was some line snagged. When I removed it, I realised it was attached to something - probably the stingray. Whatever it was made another escape when the line snapped.

First little bream on a plastic (sorry about the sand). I have to thank CHUNQX for the plastics training session, otherwise I probably wouldn't even have given them a go as HBs are my thing.

There are a lot of bream around. Every jetty and pontoon has tons of little ones around it. We took the family to the beach, and there were 30cm jobs just cruising around next to me.

The Trevally also like the plastics, this one was 36cm. To be honest, I really expected them to go a bit harder than they did, although this one put up a decent fight early on. Sorry about the chopped off head shot, but looking directly toward the rising sun at 5:18am does not make a good photo.
