What not to do...

So using a small amount of heat... tiny amount... to soften epoxy around a binding is very handy. But DO NOT USE A BLOODY HEAT GUN!

It resulted in stress breakages in two tip sections of my shikari blank thats worth $160.

So i had two options- turf it or try to make something of it...

Its ended up with a longer foregrip (duralon) and double footed guides to make it into a spiral wrap baitcaster which i plan to use skippy jigging and salmon baitcasting over the summer.

So i have a spare set of titanium sIC guides in anyone wants them for a hundred bucks...

The new guides are only hardloys but as long as they do the job. This isnt my fav rod thats for sure but deserves some use.

And started my light placcy stick project yesterday too. Building a ultraspin 2000 blank by pacific composites. Only a cheapy again but feels light a wicked blank- Im only running 2kg max through it though. Will be a similar build to HLZ midge.

Bloody hell!!

Bloomin 'eck Brad!!
I said hair dryer, not heat gun! Too hot, and you affect the resins holding the graphite together.

Like the idea of the spiral wrap, but i'm thinking you could have done the spiral in the first 4 guides, at the Following orientations: 0 degrees stripper (in line with reel), 60 degrees, 120 degrees, then 180 degrees. All the remaining guides "under" the rod.
Or, "bumper style", with your stripper at 0 degrees, a small "bumper guide" at 90 degrees, and the rest at 180 degrees ("underside" of the rod).
Basically, spiralling more aggressively to get the line under the blank quicker.
The way you show, it doesn't spiral until halfway up the rod. The idea is that most of the guides are on the underside, preventing torque.

That buttcap looks sweet!! Where can i see a listing for Pac Composites blanks?

Shortlite.... tell me about it. When you get caught stealing your sister hairdryer for fishing stuff youre dead. At least this way ive still got a jigging rod. But im so unhappy with myself atm. Im getting another blank soon to redo and if you think heat is going near it full stop... The idea with the spiral was gently gently as i was worried about the line lay on my baitcster. The leftover blank is very stiff with a fast taper still so im not too worried about the line touching the blank. That said i do see what you are talking about. I couldnt find a list of pac composite blanks on the net after a quick serch but they seem good and are cheap which is better suited to an inexperienced builder like myself. Thanks about the buttcap- it was a pretty random idea that turned out nicely.

Scotty- i got a nice pm from chris and believe me i feel like the biggest burger it aint funny...

BA- i think they are...
