Whats the rod u're looking at matching the reel to? I have only used the symtre so can only comment on this reel. I think the reel is solid a smooth it has never missed a beat and with a bit of basic maintanence it will last u a long itme. Good reel but i have never used an affinity... I may be purchasing one soon so maybe i will be able to give u a run down on that reel. HTH

pretty good... My dad usually uses this reel and he doesn't fish alot so the drag hasn't been fully tested but i can tell u from my expirience with it it has an awsome drag. Very smooth and reliable. It should go nicely on your berkley Dropshot. I may have made this up in my own head but i don't think the Symtre comes in the 1000 size. I have a 1500 and i think that may be the smallest reel in the Symtre line. HTH I have also heard the Affinity is an awsome reel but i can't tell u about it as i've never used one.

I've had an affinity (ryobi one) for about a year now and it's taking a huge beating but still going strong. The drag is great, really smooth and never lets me down. I think the affinity is heavier than the symetre which I have never used but not by alot

If I was limited to the choice between that 2 then I'd go the shimano. I don't have a symetre but I have a biomaster (a range up) and a sahara (a range down). The Sahara is permanently attached to my main plastics rod and that combo is responsible for a whole lot of PBs, PB bream, PB pinkie, PB salmon, countless couta and heaps more. The drag is fine on the sahara, the cranking is smooth but now after a couple of years I'm starting to see a bit of wear in that it looks like it might be on its last leg. That might be the issue with the lower end stuff, smooth and drag is fine but not as durable as if you get the higher end stuff and take care of them. If you're looking to upgrade in a couple of years anyway, then the Symetre is fine. I now only get Daiwa or Shimano stuff as they are smooth, reliable and lightweight.

my combos..
I use a shimano stradtic 1000 on a GL LOOMIS bronzeback rod with 4 lb fireline...a shimano stradtic 2000 on a Ian miller bream buster rod with 6 lb fireline and a shimano stradtic 4000 with 6 kg platapus pretest on a browning platinum rod for bait fishing and generally very snaggy fishing...
all have their uses when i was on the blackwood i used the 1000 combo with a river to see baby vibe and the bream buster combo with soft plastics... that saved me having to re rig all the time gt |

Thats my SP outfit, i fish a symetre 1500 on a berkley dropshot 7ft 2 with 4 lb fireline and if you can find a better outfit for anywhere near the price then buy it, i find the symetre smooth as silk and the drag is all i could ask for, i use it twice a week mostly and it has nailed me quite a lot of fish, i cant fault it.
