Just thought I'd hunt down some ideas from the video gurus about the following camera:

Hi mate.
I'm not a guru by any means...but my lil bro is. He's in film school and the like.

You can contact him via his website. He'll be more than willing to help you out.

HTH

Cheers

hahaha. Gav I forgot you were on the site.
For those that dont know, Gav's an awesome film maker and a wealth of knowledge to anyone needing help with film related stuff.
Bear...what Gav just told you is pretty much what my bro would have said anyway. He's constantly telling me he needs a 3ccd camera and certain othr functions. There is a Sony model he's used extensively that is widely regarded as the best camera around...but that was around 8-9grand (i think it's been superseeded by a new model and gone down in prce significantly)
He may very well have used the Canon model, as he has mentioned them before. Might be worth contacting him just in case he has used it, but as Gav said, the Canon looks pretty good for anything anyone on here is likely to need it for .

Gav...we must catch up sometime soon and bring my brother along so you guys can chat. He has been doing some rather exciting and fruitful work of late.

Cheers guys
Dave

Just spoke to my bro over the net and he told me to post the following...

"The Canon XM2 (the yanks call it a GL2 by the way) is a really good 'pro-sumer' camera. The fat that it is 3CCD means you're getting literaly 3 times the colour spectrum of a standard DV camera. It is more or less just a compact version of the Canon XL-1 and XL-2 (I've used both and they are widely considered to be the best 'pro-sumer' DV cameras on the public market.
The main difference between the cameras is the fact that the XL-1 and 2 can change lenses....but unless you're a pro film maker, it's not gonig to matter. Besides, it'll cost you an extra $5000. So yeah, go with the XM2 if you've got the money, because a hell of a lot of people are loving it.
Oh and the camera can take an arse whooping"

So there ya go.
HTH ya out a lil Bear.

Dave

Thanks Dave and Gav. The idea was to get an idea if it was worth the extra dollars for the XM2 over the cheaper options like the Panasonic. I've done a lot of work pro and semi pro, but not with my own gear, so I wanted to get an idea on the Canons quality. The decision to stay with the Canon was a $ decision, buying power for me as I'm getting a new Canon digi SLR at the same time.

NO SAM, no whips and chains.
