Quintrex MK2 MODIFICATION

Gday lads

Got a burning question that no one seems to quite know so Ill sound the experts out. I got a 20 year old plus quintrx fishabout. There a middle seat (Ribbed underneath and has a pole that seems to be doing nothing structurally.) Can I cut the seat out to put a plat floor in. Fell like Jana Pitman after a good bream session.

Does any one know if this is possible.

Fisherman not hurdler.

Regards

The middle seat provides a lot of structural support in most tinnies. Your hull may be OK without it, but if not you risk having the boat fold up in the middle. Usually, if you remove it then some other bracing must be put in place. One of the common methods of bracing the sides is to add wide gunnels you see on a lot of bream boats. Usually easily made out of folded sheet alloy, or flat sheet with extruded moldings forming the inside lip.
Speak to someone experianced in these things before attempting anything. There are a lot of boat yards/builders and ally workers who specialise in this sort of thing.
I can't see where you're from in your profile so I can't recomend anyone.

mods ok

as i said ive done possibly 5 or 6 of the mk II quinnies and none have failed but flotation is a problem as the seat is full of foam.that model had a problem with corrosion due to the rubber under the braces on the floor and seats witch was used as insulation but they are a good old work horse

I'm with nme

I took the middle seat out of my mkll and built a casting deck with bins under it, it turned out a ripper although you do loose that floatation, so you need to keep that in mind before heading off for the day. when you cut the weld to the hull on the ends of the seat if you use a grinder be sure you keep plently of water running on the outside of the hull to keep the alloy cool other wise you get local heating that will cause the hull paint to blisiter or burn.

painting the mk

Gday Gold

I stripped all the paint off the old girl. Shes now silver and looks a ripper. I got some new quintrex stickers as well as a few stickers of my fav. footy team, it is now my pride and joy. Dont know how much it would be to paint however.

Quintrex re spray

great - did you just use ordinary paint stripper?

Isn't the inside of the boat hot & reflective without paint?

Actually silver would be good idea for me on the outside of the boat (Rather than war scars) with my special driving skills.

I to own an early Quinny, and on the weekend just respray the ol' girl. Paint stripper that worked for me I bought at Super cheap, having tried other brands that flopped, I decided to try a cheap brand and it worked a treat.
Went to an Auto pro shop and bought some etch primer, spray it on, any old paint that was left on the hull was very quickly peeled off to, (don't ya just hate that). Applied the top coat yesterday and she looks a million dollars, she's now an off white with a hint of green, sort of suits the intertior color to. Its back in the shed tonight to refit all the accessories and onto the water this weekend...

I spent almost a year totally stripping and rebuilding my a Fishabout MkII.

I tore out the middle seat before I had even paid for the boat!.

To add cross bracing, I had floor braces welded in that do double duty.

G- Trevally, hardly in the eastern suburbs, but I used a guy near Wisemans Ferry who aslo did some work on my trailer at the same time. I was very happy with the work done, and the price paid. I'll gladly supply his name/number if you'd like.

for more detail see my thread here :

Gday Che

Yep middle seat is gone and I tell ya she opens up alot of space. I had a ali sub frame welded in and fitted by a guy up the road from me for 100 buck. I had to cut the sections for him. I used 9mm ply from memory with about 4 coats of esterpol (spelling) and then fitted off with carpet. (dont use black, it gets bloddy hot, trust me) All in all it was a good mod. If you do it try and maintain the rubber pads for insulation and shock absorbtion.

Ive also put a merc 40hp on the back which puts heaps more power into it. If you in the perth area you welcome to come have a look.

good luck
