take a look at the shimano sienna 1000fb which goes for 60 bucks, great little reel with a very good drag, mine is on a berkley dropshot 7ft2 in 2-4kg, tottal cost of outfit is under 150$, not counting braid.

The Penn 'Applause' range for a 1000 size reel would be about $100 or around that mark. Then the Penn Affinity's range is after that.

Also, Abu Garcia have a few reels in the $50-$60 range that have fairly desent drag system but a little heavey I guess.

Anyone know what those Okuma reels are that are also on or about $60? I know a couple of people who had those and the lasted for a fair while.

I started out with an Okuma avenger av-15 for about $70 matched to a studwick sikstic 7' 1-3kg $200 for the combo ..... Now I have upgraded to the okuma inspira is-15 which retails at $180 ...

If you've got the bucks and have used a cheaper reel you do notice the difference.

gday leebo
ive got a shakespeare k2 extreme 1000 and its an awesome little reel.
i got it for $50 at the fishing show a year or two ago and its still just as smooth as when i got it. i dunno if they still sell my model because i think a new ones out, i would imagine the new model would be the same quality or better.
it has 8ball bearings, line roller, good drag and its not very heavy.
i think i got mine cheap so im not sure of the actual price.
cheers
luke

All I can advise fo you is NOT to buy a Daiwa Samurai reel!
For the first 6 Months they're alright...but after a while they become rough, waterlogged and feel heavy.
My bail arm doesn't even close properly. You have to so it manually.
For a reel around that prize excluding daiwa samurais, have a look at the siennas like Rabbitoh has mentioned and the Okuma avengers, finas and Epixes.

These days I mainly use a Struddy SicStik and a Shimano stradic 1000FH reel. Well worth the money. Once you have enough money, I advise you to get one of these sweet lil' reels. Once you have more expirience you could even upgrade to the BETTER daiwa reels like Kastors, Lagunas, Caprice, Luvias, Capricorn, Certate etc. Little bit early to be talking about these quality reels but just getting you prepared...

After my expirience, I won't buy or trust any daiwa reel under $100.00 Just a note. Take my word for it.

In that price range you'll be struggling.

The Abu Cardinal 600 series, the Shimano Sienna, and the Okumas are pretty much all there is that is fairly good and cheap.

I have a tiny Abu Cardinal C100U that I got in the States. It's the basic cardinal, but has given me good performance for a good while now. It has some of the bells and whistles, but is definitely a budget reel. I do some crazy stuff too: the other day, while out with Owen, I "hooked" up to a 50 lb stingray. Got the drag down, hooped the rod, and was WINNING until the leader snapped.

I have used the Cardinal 674 for a little while. Good reel, but after heavy use starts to get a little noisy. Nothing some TLC and a good cleaning every couple of weeks can't fix. I'd choose between the 672 and the Sienna 1000/2500 for breamin'. I don't like the Okumas becasue they are extremely heavy for their size.

I agree with the weight issue for the more expensive Okuma's but the Okuma Avenger is around the same weight as similar sized Shimanos.
