I got me a Strikepro

I got a Strikepro Small Fry #221 from JV Marine in Laverton, which is 5 minutes from my house. I was served by a good guy named Tang (spelling?), he was really cool and helpful. I have a list of questions that may help me out a bit.

-How do I retrieve them?

-What is the action like?

-Any other colours that work well?

I'll definetly be going back to JV Marine again, the staff is great and they have a good selection of lures.

Cheers
Rohan

Hey LM

is that the Juro Strikepro with the tiny size 14 hooks, or is it a Strikepro lure from Strikepro?

Onya Muncher . Some anglers under rate the small fry and believe the pygmy is the better lure of the two . I reakon youve made the right decision , both of my biggest fish have been on a small fry .
Anyway hope you enjoy it , and dont worry about getting any other colors as yet , they all work .. Wait until you lose that one and then try a different color...

Brown trout has worked for me...Caught one undersize.

fish them with a snapclip to the eye and away you go. Slow retrive with few feeble twitches should do the trick for ya' mate!

They have a nice tight action.

Crab Crusher has managed to pull some good fish in area's not noted for biggish bream on those lures which makes it hard for me to write them off completely but they dont suit my style.

Even when you show Crusher a retreive that catches a fish a cast he cannot bring himself to replicate it. He is a strange cat that dances to the beat of his own drum. If he didnt come up with the retrieve himself - he refuses to use it.

This doesnt always work in his favour but when it does its arse kicking's all round. I've only tied on a small fry for one session and when it didnt match the action of my favourite lures, (pygmy and eco sfx40) i didnt want it any more.

There are blokes who find a good thing and stick to it and those who constantly think outside of the square. I only think outside of the square when the square gets boring and even then, I just steal some one elses retrieve. I think Nick is still trying to find a square vastly superior to the current model. And he will have to build it himself. The small fry's might just be the foundation to build your square on.

P.S. Once my current square gets boring I'm going for 7cm hard bodies. Big lure big fish as they say. The problem is, I cant stand the arse kickings while trying to sort out a new technique.

The small frys are good, i have the red and yellow tiger pattern one and another that has a grey dot along its silver flank.

I found i had to tune them to make them swim really well.

They are very good with an ultra slow retrieve as they dont need much to get their very tight wriggle going.

Upgrade the trebs though- i have size twelve gladiators on mine and it makes them a slow sinking lure.

The red and yellow tiger one has caught me fish on really calm crystal clear days where the bigger lures have sent fish packing.

Also have 2 pygmies in brown trout and some other colour and two pygmy 2's in black and gold and rainbow trout. All look good and have upgraded trebles.

Speaking of larger lures Lawrence, I do have a 60mm Rip 'n' Minnow made by the same lot of people who make the Mirashads. It definitely looks the part, but unusually enough, it hasn't scored me horribly much...Just one slightly above average tarpon around 50cm (probably a shade under), one 27cm jack, a flattie that may have been legal around 40cm, one just legal mackerel (my very first) and of course the estuary 'codlets' that aren't worthy to be called fish. NONE of these are horribly fussy fish with the exception of the tarpon on occassion, and although I don't have much ground to present my lures to bream on, I don't believe I've even raised one with it.

I guess the point is, you'll just have to be careful about it. Lures that look the part mightn't catch you anything at all. Or at least not your target species anyway. Though in Melbourne in this time of year, you might snag a mulla with a larger lure.

Yeh with all the talk of big winter bream, the big lures may help tempt the bad boys I'm not getting on the smaller lures.

LM, I've got a few strike pros, but only one small fry, the spotted one Brad's got. Haven't used it a lot, but I did get a bream on it first cast once - gotta be happy with that. What colour is a #221 anyway? As Crabcrusher says, save your pennies for now, at least until that one gets a good workout.

On the subject of larger lures, some other posts were talking about sx60s. Might be coming out in July??? not sure. Of course there are zillions of other larger lures already.

Lawrence as Piscine said that there are some awesome larger lures out there made from Cultiva . They produce a high quility lure in the Mirashad , which is a step up in size from the Pygmy /sx40 range . They are much like a sx48 , and have a great retrieve action .
you must think outside your square , and try some of these or even the "SMALL FRY" , as youve been throwing around that frog pygmy way to much . The Mirashad are fully decked out and worked to the nines with owner trebles and come complete with a 2pac translucent paint job. Even the seasonal enthusiast would be impressed by the lures bodywork . Soon these lures will be doing "Laps on Chapel StreeT"

Luremuncher , i know that everyone says to replace the trebles on the Strikepros straight out of the box , i agree . But maybe as this is your first SPro lure take it down and give it a trial before you change the trebs . Id hate to see you go out and spend up on owners , just to see you loose your first lure complete, with new trebs in practice.. Youll still land fish on the existing trebs , they are just a little weak .. so give it a go as is then once you get the feel for this type of lure , start your modifications .. just a thought

You've picked a good colour, and I agree with crabcrusher on the trebles - I didn't change mine until much later, and caught fish on the stock ones. If I happen to bump into you on the water some time, I'll change the rear one a for a dynatec.
