Lithium Batteries

Hi All, Unsure where to ask this question but thought this the most appropriate place. We are toying with the idea of purchasing a lithium battery for a start and general house battery for our boat however I am a little spooked by this so do have a couple of questions. The cost is astronomical but we are looking to save transom weight and this seems to be a good way of saving quite a few kilo’s.
Does a lithium battery require a different battery charger than the one I have had for many years which is a 10 amp ctek? Too that I ask whether it will run in conjunction via a voltage sensitive relay to an existing AGM battery at the front of the boat which runs the electric?
The big thing that spooks us is Lithium battery's give no warning at all of imminent failure. We know they last a lot longer but the idea of turning the key one day and finding nothing is a bit off putting.
So any one with any input on Lithium batteries is welcome to give us some advise as we have found differing opinions every where we go.

Look at buying a fire extinguisher for use on lithium first and foremost.

I know you are asking a much more complex question than what I’m answering

But here is one part of the answer

Cheaper lithium batteries exist. They are used to power emergency lighting in office buildings and have to be replaced by law well before their used by date

They are kept on trickle charge for years without actually being used

They used to be able to be picked up from scrap yards for a fraction of the price of a new one and can be used to power electric motors

Not sure if this old news is an option you wish to explore but it’s there

All news to me, trying to learn and understand the cost and benefit of going down the Lithium path. Have read about the risk of fire but good quality units seem to have a far better track record with this.
Was unaware you could purchase second hand but with their inherent quality of dying without notice you would be unsure of how long it was going to work for which as a start battery this would be a bit of an issue for us. Thanks for the suggestion though as we are still all ears and learning.

Most likely your old charger will charge the lithium battery, however when fully charged it will continue to trickle charge, which I understand is bad for lithium and will greatly shorten their life span. So best you get a charger suitable for lithium batteries. Some good reading here:

Thanks for that smashmonkey an interesting read. We have a lot to learn, the more research done the more we understand we don't know. From reading this article i think it best to disconnect the VSR from the forward electric motor battery which is AGM. Will have to research what happens while the outboard would be charging the Lithium at the stern while underway. All a bit in depth for old dudes like us.
