Yeah I'm a bit of a fan of having a fire going while bait fishing if I can. I love the smell of burning gum leaves while sipping a few tinnies by the river bank.
I found the hobo stove on youtube while looking for something else. The guy was saying it burns so pure that there is no smoke. I'd say this is highly dependant on what wood is being used. There is definitely alot less smoke. There are much more sophisticated units that incorporate small battery operated fans and they enclose the space between the rims of the cans. There is some interesting fire science going on when they are burning |

Mostly old files I'd think. I'd probably use a larger can than that, though so I could have enough room to make axe heads as well as knives.
