Albright knot
Hi guys,
I need some advice on how properly tie the Albright. Do you make the loop with the thick line (the leader) and wrap around a thin line (fire line) or opposite? What is the difference between "Improved Albright" and "Albright Special"? Do you tie any doubles before you tie an Albright? I found that the Albright tied to 4 lbs fireline is very weak (unless the fire line I've got is a "bad batch) and I have lost two trout lures (13 gramson Sunday just casting them. This was my first time I used 4 lbs fire line and am very dissapointed. Thanks in advance Alex |

Sometimes, due to its small diameter, 4lb cuts through the leader material. I ve had the same trouble. Try using the double uni knot with the fire kinked and doubled over. It works a treat. What leader yuo using? I had a bad batch of berkley vanish and it broke no matter what knot i used. HTH |

im a big fan of the albright knot, but because of braids fine diametre, and slipery charectoristics, i tend to use a bimini double in the braid before tying the albright, it stops the braid from cuting the leader and stops slipage
cheers, dave

Once again I'll bring Chris Lemess's dodgy albright diagram back into action (I think I've posted it more than Chris).
This is kinda how I do it also:

I do it slightly differently but can't be arsed drawing it... I wrap the Fireline in both directions, apart from that it's the same. The key is the way it's locked off in the pic. I rarely have to re-tie leaders when on the water now.
Re your sig, "Q: wots the most overused/ irritating line heard from custromers in a tackle shop? A: "and then it went tap tap tap . . . bang . . . . zzzzzzZZZzzz zzZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ZZZZzzzzzzz"" How about: A: "How deep does this sinker sink?" I've heard that one so many times, I love it!

Does the additional locking make much of a difference? I use a normal improved albright, which works OK with doubled fireline but tends to pop before the jig knot with just the single strand of fireline.

Locking it off made a world of difference for me.

Swoff,
will have to give it a go them. Do you normally use a double with it? |

I don't bother with a double for 4lb Fireline, I only use it in 8lb and up.

Thanks guys,
I have checked Geoff Wilson's knot library in the fishnet, and it claims that the Albright has only 50% of braking strain when joining mono and the fireline! Are there any knots that have a higher braking strain? Did anyone do any tests on Albright? Could anyone please recommend another knot for 4 lbs fireline joining 6-8 lbs Vanish instead? Cheers, Alex |

The albright is a gun knot!
If You tie this right you wont loose a leader in a hurry. I find it will pretty much always snap at the jig head...or bend the jig head open. Even better still its such a small diametre knot so theres no resistance when it leaves the guides. cheers, Nathan

Like i said, try the double uni with the fire line doubled over so it doesnt cut through the leader.
If you can and are willing, do a test with your vanish. Tie a granny knot in it and pullit and see if it snaps pretty easy... maybe i got a dud spool but i wont fish it anymore |

Yeah,
I just got two spools of Nitlon 8 and 10 lbs. Can't wait to try. Don't have a trust in Vanish any more! Cheers, Alex |
