They sound very good. Im going to give the Affinity (the next model up) a good look next weekend when im up. Will look at the 1000 model and let you know.

There is a great review in the WAFM that got me really keen to give one a whirl.

Penn

Hi Big Pete,
I have an Affinity 1000 and think it's great. Really nice drag, smooth to use. I spooled it up with Squigy braid which Im not sure if I'm real happy with yet. The only thing I found with the real is sometimes you have to put the bail arm back by hand if you havn't got it in the right position, but I reckon with a bit more practice I'll get it right.
Ron.

I have both the afinnity and the applause. I dont mind them. The affinity is better, looks better and has better drag and more bearings. It also cost more.

Ron thats an interesting comment you made abouy manually putting the bail arm back in place. I just about never use the handle of the reel to put the bail arm back, I use my right hand to retrieve, I know the most the top dudes use left hand, but hey!, anyway, as the lure lands and I've finished controlling the flight of the lure if I have had to, I do the hand swap to put the rod in my left hand, as I do this I brush the bail arm over with my right hand making sure to not let the bail arm 'clunk' back into position.I know this speil doesnt belong in this sestion of the forum, but I bought it up because I dont see that aspect you mentioned as a problem with the reel, I am interested to know however, what most other guys do when they close bail arms. Cheers. Craigio.

I've always manually closed it as I find I can control how the line feeds onto the spool better. I've found that if you let the reel do it, you end up with a lot more loops.

Thanks for that Craig. I'll try closing it manually next time. I have had a bit of trouble with the braid as Bear suggested so maybe thats what Iv'e been doing wrong.

I always used to reel in and tjat would close the bail arm but that was fishing for bass with mono lines. After i started using braids i found u get loads of loops in the line if u don't close it manually. So now i close it maually and that can help when casting at snags with distanc control.

I also found out that every reel has a spot at wich u have to put some effort into closing it by reeling in. Its the bit that actually flips the bail arm.

some reels actually have three or 4 of those , to flip the bail quicker, sometimes making them harder to flip by winding the handle, but as bear said its better to do it manually anyway

I also find that with very lite line you get alot more loops if you "dont" do it by manually.

I tested one out a couple of weeks ago. Felt very nice and *almost* bought it. I atually decided to go with the Shimano Symetre 1500. Much lighter, longer warranty and the drag is just as good, if not better. The Penn certainly looks sexier

my brother owns one, i like the drag on the applause and i like the thick bail, like u said it is a pretty sexy reel, like some of u guys mentioned the bail has to be flipped manually, i dunno whether after a while something in there will soften up, then it will flip with a turn of the handle?

I usually never flip the bail arm by winding in 'cause it feels like somethings going to break. But i tried on my applause yesterday just for the hell of it and i didnt have any probs with the aoutomatic bail arm closing thingo. I still do it manually though now.
