nilsmaster spearhead and tilsan barra, the rivers on the west coast of cape york like the jackson, dougboy etc are quite shallow so shallow diving lures are the go, not the deep divers used to troll in deep NT rivers

Leamos,
Gret reply you are spot on.. I found the good ol gold bomber did the trick beutiffly in small creeks . I also found that bright lures like pinks and purples where great but our biggest barra was on a black $4 bargin from K-mart.. Cant go wrong with the Nilsmaster lures ither. Around weipa if you can get on the Mission river (need a boat) cruise along and cast on to the shallow sand banks , usherly on bends in the river , retreve your lure back to the deeper water . The best lure for this was a bibless rattler in like a mullet pattern . Look out for things with teeth thogh Allso poppers are great visual fishing . spot the fish cast to it .. POP, POP ,SMASH . Great fishing off the weipa jetty as well great queenies and BIG G,Ts Take HEAPS of terminal tackle you WILL loose some . Hope this helps Chaser

Don't forget to get some plastics as well. 3"+ are going to be a lot of fun that way.

4 inch+ stickbaits are great too because they are pretty snag proof

gday
this is probably too late but i just got back from 4 months in cairns, and i found the best HB's to use when the barra were boofing on the surface were Gold Bombers & Leads Highjacker. And when they were feeding deeper down i was using Crazydeeps (with these you gotta crank it for the first 5 winds to get it down then a nice slow retrieve). with the soft plastics i was using the squidges size 8 (150mm) bleeding mullet style with a 18gram resin head with the rattle. doing a real slow retrieve with pauses. ya best chance of getting barra are on the big run out tides which are happening around the full moon and the new moon atm. Barra are ambush feeders so they dont like to exert alot of energy when feeding so slow retrieves work best. I mannaged 3 in my time there 88cm, 101cm and 131cm all in salt water. Hope this helps ya if ya havn't allready been. cheers Jarrad

Variety the spice of life!
If you can take a variety youve got your bases covered! Definateley a fizzer or popper for example a Bills Bug or Skitter pop! A shallow diver Like a gold bomber, B52, Mad mullet! A mid diver for instance Scorpions or Flatz Ratz. Deep divers are good from the shore and can be fished at varying depths depending on speed of retrieve, these include Poltergiests and Crazy deeps. Check the Almanac for best moon phases for the month and keep your hooks sharp. If you can get reidy's lures where you are get a couple of little lucifers! they catch so many fish especially when they are fussy. Have a great trip, I'm jealous!
