Snapper soft plastic rod.

G'day all, in the market for a new soft plastic rod for snapper in port phillip bay, i'm looking at the daiwa gen black wicked weasel as i have the itchy twitchy for my lighter work which im loving so far, just want to see if theres any other options out there, i dont want to spend more than $200, and dont want to get anything posted so would need somthing i can buy around melbourne.

keeping in mind the target fish are 8kg snapper, not pinkys

Really depends where your getting em, 8kg snapper in the open isn't going to require the same gear as snapper in structure. It you like the gen blacks just get the heavier model, should do you just fine more most of the bay work. I use a 5-9kg air edge for most of my tight structure fishing for snapper and it's done well and quite cheap

i have factored that in and i'll be fishing over sand 70% of the time, other 30% is reefy bottom, thats why i was leaning towards the wicked weasel.

but that might change if i can find some more good reef that holds snapper.

i've read abit about the air edge range, what do you think of the lighter models if you've tried them?

I haven't tried the other models but for the price it's hard to go wrong. I never liked the gen black rods because of the guides and the grips, so I prefer the air edge. The blank isn't anything special but then again you can't expect too much.

i quite like the pflueger patriarch xtr in the 2-5kg and 3-7 kg models, ill take my stradic in to the shop and see what its like on the rod, if i like it that will probably be the rod i buy.
also checked out the abu garcia veritas in a 3-5kg model, no where near the quality of the pflueger.

The SMX73L rod IS an awesome rod as you've seen mate, it's got a balance and power to weight that leaves other similarly rated rods in the dust.
but for the OPs requirements I believe the Maxim 72M spin will fit his price as well as performance requirements. with SiC guides and a X-wrap reinforced spine and the softer tip to cast, work and turn snapper.

the only 2-5kg rod in the range is 6'8.
I think i want the PPS73MH-XF model anyway.
