Stradic 8000 hold up to NZ kingies?

Hi guys,

ive got not much clue in this area. I might being planning a NZ trip and hopefully get on to some kingies. Was going to spool my stradic 8000 with 50lb braid? Would this be o.k and what do you guys use to target these fish. Im hoping to target medium to larger fish or is the stradic under gunned? Cheers

I've seen people get dusted on an 18000 stella with 100 pound braid whilst fishing topwater so if you're target larger fish you're probably undergunned.

Thanks CB.

o.k I might revised the above to say 12kg-ish fish. I guess that is more realistic. Still a big fish in my book though. Cheers

There's a 'white stella' upgrade you can do to the Stadic FJ 5000/8000

This turns them in the best reel imaginable

I fished out of Taranga NZ caught Kings to around 18kg mostly while jigging with a 5000 Saltiga the previous model with 65lb braid no worries. It's more important to have a reel that has a very good drag and strong gearing. I don't own a Stradic so don't know much about the drag setup. But the line capacity on the 8000 should be ample. Your the best judge of wether the drag is up to the task or not.

Unfortunately a few extra bearings is no substitute for sw resistance, drag quality and nternal metal quality. You can buy stradic fj's for 300 bucks new with 11 bearings, inc. double roller bearings and carbon drag. Still going to fail.

If you plan to chase kingfish all day, its good an well to say, just chasin 12kg, etc. but 90% of the time it doesnt work like that. Chances are with the stradic, you will get spooled rather quickly an be left watching others fish. Forced to fil lock drag on excessive fish an ruin the reel or chances are you do manage to just find a few around 10kg, but even they strip line like no tomorrow with 10kg of drag.

If a stella 10thou is out of the question, you could get good use out of a saragosa or twinpower.. You need a good 15kg of quality drag for a day of kingfishing

The 8000 Stradic is a fine reel but I think you will need something tougher from the top shelf regardless of brand.

I wish I'd had the experience to offer first hand advice but yet to tackle a good kingie!
But every decent fishing show you see jigging for kings they have 10000-20000 saragosas/Stella's or 4500/ 6000 etc saltigas.
Cheers matt

Get the largest size salina3 to do it on the cheap. Has 24kg drag (allegedly).

Thanks fellas. Looking at the cheaper options as I cant justify a stella for just one trip.

Benny the okumas do have a great rep at a very affordable price so that maybe an option as well as the saragosa perhaps. cheers all
