When is Fireline Dead?

When is Fireline Dead?

I haven’t does as much fishing as I would like to – and I have some 4lb that is now faded, having too many tangles, and I thought was splitting down the middle - a but like split ends in hair.

So It seems like its time to replace it. Though the idea of reversing it has some merit, I am going into a comp in 2 weeks.

I guess I have waited too long to replace it - So when do you guys replace it. What are the early signs that it is on the way out?

I looked in the posts below and did not read much on this.

Thanks

Gary

I change it when it starts getting so hairy that it looks thicker than 20lb line! Considering its benefits, $25 is not too much to pay for a new spool. For bream I buy the 125yd spools and use mono backing to fill up the spool otherwise you'd use up the whole spool and its only half full on your reel because Fireline is so thin. I'm using a Shimano 1000 by the way not 2500 or anything like that.

The other time you know to change is when it snaps easily....
I kept trimming mine after every few sessions by a little bit, it last fairly well...

BTW, do you guys wash down the reel/line fairly well? I found it helps the fireline too.

I change my line every couple of months, by that stage it's usually quite frayed and totally white.
I don't top-shot, but I use shallow spools so I only need 250-300yds to fill them.

Andrew,

You still have some backing to the reel though don't you? I do just in case it slips.

With the 2004 spool, I use a little mono and 125yds 4lbs spool.

Glenn,
I still use about 10 wraps of soft mono just to stop the fireline slipping.

I'll tell you when Fireline is dead.

When your mate comes around to your house to pick you up for a fish, you put your rods in the boats upright rod holder. Your mate drives off and the jig gets caught in a tree leaving 120 yards off fireline and about 80 yards of backing to tear off your reel as you drive to the boat ramp, oblivious.

Some dude pulls up to you at the lights and goes, man you've got fishing line out the back of your boat. You get to the boat ramp and you and your mate walk around the boat but can't see any fishing line. You laugh at the fool at the lights, hahahah what an idiot.

A short time later you grab your rod out of the boats upright rod holder to start fishing and find that the spool is empty! Uh oh.

You get home and find the jig still in the tree with the leader still perfectly attached. (gotta love 6lb Yamatoyo leader) You wind the line onto your reel and get all your fireline back including the knot to the mono backing still attached to the other end, which incidentally is down the end of the street and around the corner.

That, my friend, is when your fireline is stuffed.

Happened to me this morning when Craig and I went out for a fish.

Glenn,
I'm very interested in this line you mention, let me know how it goes. Also, if you can, see if it comes in big spools, I'm so sick of buying 300yd spools of Fireline.

The funny part was it did go down the street, round the corner (and a few trees) and then back down the road at a 90 deg angle. A very funny sight to see when we got back from the boat ramp.

"Bloody fisherman, leave their line all accros the road, trees, carparks, driveways"

Andrew, will do.... I think its arriving in about 3 weeks... I'm hoping to get it before the Perth comp.... the thing that I'm not sure about is that its multicoloured just like their surf and jigging line....

I don't get the idea of using limp fireline... The reason we use Fireline is because it has no give in it and you feel everything, every bump, no memory too and its not like braided line which is like thread. If you want something with more limp why not get good mono or braid instead?
