Show us ya grip!
Hey guys,
One of the aspects I find more interesting when purchasing a new rod is checking out the different grips available. The grip is really the only part of the rod where the manufacturer can really stamp their signature on the rod and turn a rather boring stick into something truly spectacular and the envy of everyone. I am currently working with Damian How or Howler Custom rods in designing an new custom rod bream rod for myself and I'm interested to see what everyone's favourite grips are? Post up your pic of your favourite and yell us why you rate it so highly. I've decided to base the grip for my custom rod on the new Megabass Destroyer X7's grip. I was keen to go with a skelton reel seat as I wanted to keep the weight down and have it as sensitive as possible, however I wanted to include some support for my palm so I've added some cork below the seat. Also a few sections of carbon bling to give it some personality. Once the grip is built I'll post up some pics, in the meantime here's a photo of the X7's grip. image.jpg Cheers, Corey.

I made my own rod
Got the blank from a mate And bound all the guides and chopped up an old Reel seat to make a skeleton seat Used some corks to make the grip from I added a piece of cork in between where the reel is held in at first it was good, but i wasnt quite happy with it So i added another bit of cork (the cleaner looking piece) For something thicker to hold, feels better to hold now designed for functionality, not looks That's my rod anyway..

I haven't got this rod (yet) but the front grips on the volkey are the best I've felt for how I hold the rod. I hold the grips with the stem of the reel between ring finger and little finger and index finger fully extended out, touching the blank in front of the grips and this smooth taper and positioning of grips with the reel seat suits it perfectly.
Sorry the picture is so small, posting up from my phone

Love the volkeys n skyroad handles. Cork for sensitivity and foam at the bottom for the palm of your hand. Also doesn't expose the winding/thread. I dislike on light rods seeing the thread. It's unnatural to feel it against your hand imo. Imo a good handle covers up the threads, its both more comfortable for how I carry a rod n looks neater and finished. |

The Volkey grip is one of my favourites too. The grip molds perfectly to my hands, super comfortable.
Sorry about the dodgey photo. 20140420_080830.jpg

I love the daddies wilderness /duff rods style grips they sit my tiny palms perfectly. I also hate the exposed threads for the reel seat due to them feeling funny when holding. One reason I hate Nitro rods.

Here's my nitro grip! Can anyone help with how to fix this easily?
I love the rod. Hand never touches the thread. Just the cork has seen better days.

Maybe you could scrape away the remains of the front grip and make up a replacement cork grip that has the same dimensions. You could then cut the replacement grip in half (longitudinally) and then glue it into place with some 24 hour Araldite, using heavy duty rubber bands to hold it until the glue dries. Should work, I think.
Is that some normal wear and tear on the grip of your Nitro Vapor, or did the dog get to it? Personally, I love using my Nitro Vapors. The minimal grip has always appealed to me. |
