Remove anti-reverse = lighter reel???

I've got a technical question. I could open up a reel and see for myself but being the good BM citizen that I am, I'm putting this thread up for you all to digest.

My question is, since the anti-reverse mechanism is a joke (i.e. used always in gear, no need for a switch) and as useful as male nipples (or other things like our tail bone or appendix), can it be removed in entirety or parts of it removed to save weight?

Do you mean remove just the anti-reverse switch or the entire anti-reverse bearing?

Yeah the whole shebang. It's sizeable, looks like it could save a noticeable amount of weight.

For me it would be so minimal a weight loss there'd be no difference to your fishing, so I don't reckon its worth bothering.
How much weight do you think it would save?

you really don't want to take out the anti reverse bearing. that would be messy. My megabass reels don't have the switch, and honestly I wish they did, simply because when you are trying to get the reel to fit in a box for storage or travel it makes it a lot easier.

Well let's see, to guess it would be the weight of the plastic casing and the metal barrels and ball bearings... say 10 grams seems reasonable. Not a bad weight loss for something like a 1000. Just a guess though.

Say a Ci4/+ and Stella weigh around the low 170g and a Sustain is around 190g. A 10g reduction might be good for rod and reel balance.

Talking

ok ... now that i have stopped laughing ..

firstly - you need a bit of weight to balance the rod...

secondly - just moving the rod back in your hand will have far more effect at tye rid tip.

instead of 2 fingers in front of the reel use 3..

i use my whole hand on the forgrip when i fish which makes my plastics action better...

but then again - the idiots that design rods these days have no idea about such things.. a lot of rods have either no grip or something that looks like a black foam testicle...

their idea is - lets feel the rod blank instead... well if your hand senses are that poor , maybe you should take up knitting...

I can't afford Megabass but the Quantum Smoke and Exo don't have the switch either. Alright a lightweight reel. I actually run a couple of 30's on rods and love the extra casting distance achieved with the wider spool size. No issue with weight but they are a small sized reel IMHO

Im with Stella Fella, I hate that the megabass reels dont have the switch. I have had the braid go under the spool and you cant switch the anti reverse to reel back and loosen the braid, its freaking horrible.

These must be one of the silliest reasons I've ever heard after Stella fellas of course. You can't be serious to? You can loosen the drag a little and turn the spool... I've fished with my Megabass reels for years and never once thought I need to wind in reverse!

no dude the line gets wrapped around the shaft that the spool sits on, you take the spool off but you cant undo the line as its wrapped so tight. Its even worse when its under the section where the bearing/drag clicker is and is sitting tight against the body, you have to cut the braid in that position.
