New to Melbourne

Hey guys,

I've just moved over from WA, into the Richmond area near the Yarra.

I went for a wander with the dog through the area the Yarra smelled a bit like a bad fart. Is that normal and does it hold decent bream between Flinders Street and Herring Island? I've fished the Docklands a few times when I've been over here for work and I know there are a few fish there. I'd just love to find some OK ground within walking distance from home.

Keen to do some Redfin/Cod/Trout fishing too.

I look forward to meeting up with some of you guys in the future. I've been in the WA tournaments for a few years but I'll just slowly ease into it in Melb while I try to figure it out.

I'm not asking for anyone's spots, just some vague suggestions are fine

Cheers, Ash

Sweet, sounds good. I'd planned to get to the weigh in but simply forgot about it.

Welcome to the Worlds most liveable city!!

The Yarra is certainly not the sort of water you'd bottle and sell off to the hipsters, but trust me it can produce some great fishing. There was actually some clean up going on in the area you speak of today, by Park Victoria, so this may have stirred up the offal, and emitted the aroma you speak of

The fishing between Flinders and Herring, can be a great landbased area, at times, so if that where you are living get down there and work the edges...

As the others have stated there are plenty of places within a 2 hour drive that also hold great fish, but a tad more sterile..

Cheers Nick

Thanks guys.

I'll hit up that area over the next couple of weeks and see how I go then. Flowing water and casting tight into structure seems to be the way to go.

As for tackle store, is the Compleat Angler in the city good?
Might look at a simple fly outfit too.

Welcome to Mexico Ash!!
Like the others have said there are plenty of spots local, even if you want to work the yarra all the way into town you will get good fish.
If not there are plenty more local spots, have you got a boat or a yak?
Cheers Dale.

That's my local shop when I'm at the office. The prices can be a little on the upper side of things .... Don't be afraid to ask for a price match - they'll usually do it ... I prefer to buy from the site sponsers but if I need it that day I go to compleat .

Neither yet, sold the boat before moving over here unfortunately. Will probably get a yak again, really wishing I hadn't sold my fully kitted out revo (when I bought the boat).

Higher price is to be expected I guess. Do any site sponsors in melbourne do fly gear?

Welcome to Melbourne Ash!

Compleat in the city has got a good range and some very knowledgeable staff members. Prices can be on the higher end as Sloth mentioned.

Plenty of fish up your end of the river (bream and mullas), just a matter of getting the tides right and finding what they want at that time of year.

If you need anything, just yell out!

Cheers,
Paul

Welcome to Melbs.
The fishing can be tough here but our Toadies aren't as prevalent.
The Yarra can reward you with the fish or session of a lifetime, or it can Laugh in your face and slap you with donuts.

Happy to help out if you have any queries.

Don't know ... not that I've seen but I haven't looked that hard. I've only bought lures and plastics to date. I know compleat in the city is split into two shops one is compleat angler and one is FlyFisher ... so definitely worth sticking your head in there.

Higher prices can be a bit cheeky A micro at their rrp is 16.95 but they'll price match to 11.95.
