leader question wastage???

I have recently swapped my reels from mono to using braid. I have learnt how to tie leader onto the line and have been tying on about a rods length. After a few casts and lure changes i have noticed that my leader has shrunk to around 30 cm. My question is do i just tie more leader onto the 30 cm that is left, or do i cut it and retie the whole rods length. Is there another way to 'save' as much leader as possible? Just wondering as I feel it is a waste to just throw out that 30 cm.

thanks in advance, Peanut

Most people will cut off and tie a new length of leader on. Have you considered using a clip, they work well and you don't waste as much leader when changing lures etc.

Cheers

Going from a whole rod length to 30cm in a few casts and lure changes doesn't sound right...

But if this is the case then just cut the leader off and tie a new one on, like Richo said, clips work really well and you won't waste leader at all if you change lures oftenly.

Hi Peanut, most people fishing for bream will tie on a leader thats at least 2-3 rod lengths.

I tie leaders that are at least 3 rods lengths plus a few winds of the handle more to account for wastage from tying on lures and to account for any scuffs in the leader down near my lure.

I reckon thats pretty standard practice.

Ploughing thru leader at a great rate is just part and parcel to breaming

As Squidlipz said, tie long leaders so you don´t have to waste as much time tying new leaders after changing lures a few times and also if your line scuffs you can cut it and you´ll still have plenty. the longer the leader the better anyway, right?

Hey buddy,

Try some size 00 clips, the decoys ones work a treat never had issues with them however dont use them on placcys.

I also used normal flouro such as sunline fc sniper instead leader when i was a broke uni student and that seems to work too saves a lot of $$$.

Cheers

I think a member on here BWJ uses about 100 m of 4 lb leader. But that's too long.
I generally go with a rod length.

+1.

I recommend the Decoy Round Snaps in size 00 (if you got nails to open them) or size 0 which are a bit easier to open.

i like to use roughly two wingspans plus a bit so about 140 inches or so, longer in clear water. once i get down to about 3/4s or so of a rod length i'll do a full change. at the end of the day that amount of leader cost 20-80cents depending on material so its a nothing. if its the nearing the end of the day i dont bother.
