Talking Finally ..... First Bream

Just a quick note to all struggling to start this sport .... persistence does pay off......

A few PBs:

First Aussie fish
First Bream
First Bream on Lure
PB Bream (est. 24cm fork)

hahah - as you can see easy to make up lots of PBs given its my first !

I've really stuggled to get into breamin'. Been fishing my local river system, the maribyrnong and its been hard and frustrating. Really resisted throwing bait in there as I really wanted to crack sp and/or lure, but as the doughnuts mounted up it got harder and harder. Some sessions left me despondent and wondering if I wasn't just pulling lures through empty water. Bought a bunch of second-hand lures from this sites classified... lost a few, irreparably damaged a few smashing them into bridges with errant casts..... read pretty much every thread in getting started forum ... got my gear sorted, hit high tide, low tide, structure, flats, bridge bashed (literally!), bank bashed, on the top, on the bottom, shallow suspending, deep suspending .... everything ... and ... not a... touch ....AAARrrrrrggghhhhh

After some advice from other forum members (mainly vxcalais - thanks!).... I hit up a docklands spot close to my work........ which resulted in my first little breambo. With my nice rod cosy at home in the garage it fell to my cheap travel rod - a Daiwa Telescopic rod, 5lb fluoro on a shimano sedona and a strike pro microvibe.

Get a few funny looks stood fishing in my corporate wardrobe .... but so worth it ....its possible to get a lunchtime or morning session in most days for 30-40 mins - could become a habit. Mainly a relief that the first one is under the belt. Although you know logically you're doing most things right, as the doughnuts mount up its hard not to start doubting and then finding yourself changing lure and retrieve every five minutes or worse start retrieving too fast ... thinking more effort pays off!

From starting to catching my first I reckon its been a couple of months and about 7 or 8 sessions so about 20 hours all up ...... I have a young family so I don't have the luxury of time and I only get short sessions .... as they rack up without a touch its a killer. Just have to have confidence that you're doing the right things and it pays off eventually ..... nice thing about docklands is you know the fish are there.... I think the 'Nong will take a while longer to crack

This is an awesome site - without the knowledge shared on this site by so many members I doubt I'd have got to this point as soon as I did.

Cheers all

Dave

Good work mate.
Once you get the hang of fishing the Docks and Yarra areas, you'll be taking much longer lunch breaks.

GTX Rally (Dale) caught his first on SP's there, same story as yours, lunchtime in his suit and tie. A lot of the local B.M. guys started their lure fishing at the Docks, some of them are now well placed on the competition circuit.

Cheers, Greggo

The 'Nong is so much easier to fish than the Docks. In fact it's referred to as the "Nancybyrnong" because it's that easy to get fish there.

That's so untrue!! You're pulling my leg lol

Tell me where these mythical 'Nong bream exist !? I've fished docklands hwy up to edgewater and the lake itself and not a touch of anything .... even took the treadly to cover ground quicker, haha. Admittedly been too lazy to go higher up towards the anglers but I only have so much time to cast every 50m of bank....

The 'Nong is nails as far as I've experienced.....

Try virgin systems or less fishing pressured systems like gippy lakes and surrounding rivers, barwon, anglesea, some small creeks on the way to philip island etc where there is less fishing pressure. Bream aren't as cluey and less cautious there unlike their city cousins.

All you need to do there is fish the wet part!
Squidgy Wriggler or Gulp worm, bounced slowly along the bottom near rocks or structure. Or the "good 'ol" Ecogear SX 40 worked along the rocks if the bottom fishing doesn't work.

Congrats on your first Bream, now you're on your way, it gets easier as the Docks slowly reveals its secrets with each session. The Docks is great for after work and in between meetings

Lol Greggo, wonder where those Nancybrynong dudes are. Still cant believe how good they got it there

Hmmmm..... I had tried sp a couple of times in edgewater lake but not the river. I've got wrigglers and gulp jigging grubs .... No worms though. I might have a crack at the river with the sp again.... I was toying with the idea of the warmies so I could try SP for flathead if the bream were doing their usual non-appearance.

Congrats on the first of many!
Don't worry about the suit and tie - fly fishers wore tweed for years!
