Flurocarbon or plain mono leaders?
Ive being buying and using flurocarbon as leaders for ages now.
But it makes me think is this just a gimmick or is it way better than your standard mono?? Standard mono is certainly cheaper and you get way more in a spool. Apparently fluro is invisible under water but i dont know if that's true either? Personally i can see it? Does fluro make you catch more fish or have we been brainwashed. Haha Anyway, what do you think? Cheers

i have been using fc rock and yozuri hybrid leader and i cannot see that in the water.i have more hook ups when fishing with mates that use mono but i fish a lot lighter than they do.

I dont have any issues with what i am using though i do have a question mark on it's visibility under water, rather i am just questioning whether mono would perform as well?

I find mono to be more stiff and not that great for lures and fluro carbon is way better because every fluro that I have used it has been great like u can't see it under water plus I find it stronger. Well that's my opinion!

And if u recon the fluro carbon that u are buying isn't bang for ur buck well find one that suits u like buying 100m spools than 50 m spools but at the end of the day I recon fluro is worth buying for leader

Here's a bit of a family, and friends of old experiment
![]() Fluoro "WORKS" Well it sure did when my friends, and I did an experiment, some years back when I use to go diving with my friends, and dad,+ a few of his fishing buddies asked us to take a look at their fishing lines under water while they were fishing, and pop up giving their lines a rating out of ten fo find the best at that time,so,we did just that ![]() #1. Check for strength. #2. Check for sight, thickness, colour shades, and presentation on both Mono + Fluoro. Result? #1. Momo strength? Platypus won. #2. For the least of sight? Fluoro won. #3. Sight again? "It was a very close call to a foreign brand of Mono" which I can not recall the name of now. I remember one of dad's friends got it from his original home country he had been born in. Not sure if it was produced there,or,imported there? Gae. ************************************************** ***************

FC rock, new 2m leader per session = 35c a session in Fluoro costs, I'm happy to pay it, even if it was a gimmick

Guess it really depends on where you are fishing mate, if your fishing in murky or dirty water the Mono will prob do the job but Fluoro is definately a better option imo for clear conditions and flats work, guess it also depends on what fluoro u are using. I use FC Rock and it is a lot less visable then any mono ive ever used. Guess fish some flats with Mono and see if you get the same results you normally would, only one way to find out, experiment.

I don't necessarily think Fluro is invisible under water, you can test it out yourself just by dunking it in a glass of water or your fish tank. It has "the same refractive index as water" which i guess means that light doesn't distort when it goes through the fluro and hence makes it harder to see.
One of the major benefit of using fluro as leader is that it has better abrasion resistance. |

If flouro was invisible, why would we bother using 3 and 4lb leaders?
Its just less visible than mono and its sinking qualitys and abrasion resistance make it a better leader IMO.

Flurocarbon has a refractive index similar to water which means that light doesn't bend as it goes through it which visually makes it hard to see in water.
glass_of_water.jpg Fish have a lateral line that feels vibrations in the water thicker line puts out more water disturbance than thinner lines. Knots can also increase the about of water disturbance. 99% of the time these things might not make a difference but when things are against you the 1% like 2/3lb fluro straight through may make the difference between a fish taking your lure or not.

As said fluoro's properties make it harder to see underwater, nothing is invisible. I also like its sinking properties when using light lures. It does depend on the fishing you are doing as to what type of leader to use |

I've actually heard that in murky water fish rely more on their lateral line and hence lighter line with less vibration would be beneficial. Who knows?
Just wondering if anyone has tried actually being in the water and comparing the two to see if there is a real difference. like comparing Clear (untinted) type mono and flouro with the same diameter. Looks like Sol Lady did something similar above but the variables weren't addressed.
