You'll need to rough the ally up with steel wool or a wire brush then etch prime it with quality aluminium etch primer so the 2 Pack you use will stick if that helps mate

The film type stuff you talk about is called a vinyl wrap. Not a cheap option.
If you want to do you tinnie properly, you should get it blasted to remove the outer layer of oxide and coat with a corrosion preventative like Di-oxidine as soon as possible (same day). Then as has been suggested, a primer and then your top coats. Good idea to do a couple and then to really top it off do a few coats of clear. That way most marks or scratches will only rub through the clear and hopefully not through the whole lot. |

+1 on the thorough cleaning,as for paint i'd probably go for a 2 pack polyurethane designed for trucks etc it's tough but flexible,so it should not flake off if you dent the hull and a good etch primer to suit, give olarenshaws in sunshine a call they deal in ppg products and should have what you need.

Di-oxidine is a corrosion preventative. It's not a main stream product and used a lot in the aviation sector.
There are similar products that condition the alloy surface so no need to worry if you can't find it. It's a specialist product that I wouldn't be concerned about if you can't find it, but if can then you will preserve the condition of your hull further. |

I used Killrust etch primer and killrust top coat on mine easy to spray and easy to touch up any scratches.

Clean all the old paint off, scrub it like crazy with airtec 23 detergent.
Then scrub it with di oxidine 624. Preform a waterbreak test to make sure it's clean. Then use a product called alodine 1200s. Leave that on for about 40 seconds or until the surface goes a slight yellow/gold colour. Wash the excess alodide off with demineralised water and do not tough the surface. The alodine will form your protective coating and allow your primer & paimt to stick like sh!t to a blanket! From there primer and paint and it'll look like new! Just be careful because alodine and dioxidine can be pretty nasty on your skin! Regards Boris |

Havent had any problems with the paint at all mate , have had a couple of hard hits against the pier at Clifton Springs with tools coming in to quick , and a touchup with a soft bristle brush and bobs ya uncle scratch gone , the usual things scraping the paint when in the shed like kids bikes or moving something or the car door , beauty of killrust is it flows so nicely in scratches that they basically disappear. I'm more than happy with the paint on mine. At the end of the day the prep is the important part , 2 pack is great but need to spray properly and right environment and chips harder to fill and paint etc etc , I just made sure my hull was squeaky clean and dust free before applying the etch primer and then the final coats , straight off the gun a nice finish

Should i use the di oxidine to protect what iv done so i dont have to do it all the time or some type of clear coat ? maybe both?? |

I'm sure theres a clearcoat type product used on plate alloy boats, I cant recall the name though.

The product you are thinking about might by Nyalic. It's a clear coat that is applied to seal the aluminium and reduce oxidisation.
