Daiwa Ryoga Bearing Upgrade

Hey all,

Has anyone with a Ryoga upgraded the standard sideplate and spool bearings to Boca Orange Seals or anything similar? It casts pretty well with the standard bearings but am wondering if ABEC7's will make a noticeable diff.
I did this upgrade on another reel i had and it made a HUGE diff mainly because the casting from out of the box was pretty ordinary.
Anyone done this to their Ryoga or Pluton and found it worthwhile? Or will it just turn into windknot/birds nest central?

Cheers,
Chris

I did it in a couple of calcuttas and yeah it created some decent birds nests
I think because the spool is larger and holds more line, it creates more inertia that is harder to control with the upgraded bearings
However with a highly tuned thumb, its not too bad
I much more prefer the upgrade on small bc reels

Thanks for that - birds nests is definitely something i don't want, especially with expensive braid.
Maybe i'll look into it later down the track once i have more experience with the reel.

How do you rate the Ryoga mate, I am pretty close to buying one for cod/jacks/bass.

Do you have the the 1016 or the 2020?

I did think about replacing my bearings also.
but came to the conclusion why play around when its working fine.

I love my 1016 to bits it,s bloody brilliant
the only negative i have found was it started to get cold on my hand early mornings. As it is a metal body but it sits and feels better in my hand over a low profile
due to its size.
and the pluton comes out when needing more

1016HL
Haven't caught anything on it but it's very good to use. I bought it to live bait for inshore kings but haven't gotten around to that yet
If you need convincing, check these vids out.

He's got a few more vids on his channel where he's using the 1016.

I found the Daiwa CRBBs are quite good quality in higher end reels nowadays. I have a Zillion J-Dream and the only problem of the stock bearings is, over-lubed. Give it a thoroughly clean, and re-lube with good light oil, which I use ZPI F-0.

Before and after cleaning, the spool spins for 5s and 22s, respectively.
