Nikkon comes from the greek work, Nike, which means "To Win"
So if you want the best, or to be "winning" as Charlie Sheen puts it, you need Nikkon

That said, what is your price range?

Hi Frewzy,

I use a Nikon D5100, you'll get one for that price or you can step down to the D3100 and get two lenses for that price which would be better if you want some distant shots. You can get a 18 - 55mm and a 55 - 250mm lens which then gives you more options.

For 1500 I would get a cheaper camera (still DSLR) and buy yourself some nice glass to go with it.

I have a 600D canon, which is awesome. I mainly use a canon 1.8f 50mm lens and a Tamron 18mm-270mm lens and that covers a lot of applications. You should be able to get that setup for $1300 online and then grab yourself a couple of Class 10 memory cards, some UV filters and Circular polarising filters (cuts glare of water if you are trying to shoot release shots) and a good water resistant travel case for it. Should be able to get all that for $1500.

They're both great. Its the same as the Daiwa vs Shimano or Ford vs Holden arguements. And if you don't see yourself wanting to spend thousands on new lenses then there is Sony and Pentax that do entry level DSLR's as well to consider.

I use a Canon 500D and I find it great. Go and have a look at them and work out what suits you. I chose my Canon because it felt better in my hand than the Nikon, Sony or Olympus I also looked at.

The only thing with DSLR Camera is your initial choice of brand does lock you in a bit as the lenses aren't interchangeable between the brands (unlike rods and reels). So if you buy a Canon and decide you want to go to a Nikon your up for new lenses as well.
Don't be too concerned if you do decide to get right into photography, the lens that you get with the entry level packages will more than likely need to be upgraded anyways. If you thought high end fishing gear was expensive, wait until you look at some higher end lenses (not that most people need them - the basic ones are still pretty good).

You won't really go wrong which ever way you jump.

I would suggest a decent Cannon and 2 lenses like the other guys. The 600D as you can buy 2 decent lenses to go with it for that sorta money. You can just go something like below but the lenses are fairly basic.

Canon EOS 600D Twins Lens Kit 18-55mm & 55-250mm 600 D Digital SLR Camera Kits + FREE GIFT + 12MTH LOCAL WARRANTY
$764.00

You can get the 600D for about $500 for the body only and spend a grand on 2 ok lenses. The Tamron 17-50 F2.8 (non VC) is highly praised by many and is only $320.00. I would also get a lens like a 18-270. Then get your cards, filters and maybe a cleaning kit. That will fit into your budget with maybe a tiny bit to spare.

Cheers
Chris

If u have a good camera shop like a camera house near by go and have a play. There are slight differences but just pick them up and see what feels right. Both cameras are good.

I have Nikon my mate has Canon both turn out good shots, it's more the nut behind the camera.

Good luck.

When it comes down to it.

You want a good camera to take good photos....

You can get the canon 400d brand new with 2 lenses for less than $1000.
For what you want it for it will do the job 100% with some still left over.

Iv had my 400d for 6yrs and hasn't missed a beat.
I have photos on my wall blown up to a1 (841x594mm) with no troubles at all.

My suggestion, brand new 400d body only and match it with sigma lenses.

The only downside with the 400d, if you have big hands the body feels very small. A 450d might be a better option

In the entry level dslr category, the lenses that come in the lens kits are the most restrictive parts

Canon and Nikon are as good as each other. Neither are better.

It really depends on what you want to achieve and what you're hoping for in features.

There are so many differing cameras around now, entry level is always a good start.

If you're looking at the more semi-pro and pro cameras, then there's a lot of dosh involved.

The biggest thing to photography is the lens and a good solid body. You'll get that with both the Canon and Nikon either way.

Have fun choosing.

As Trev said, a lot of it comes down to the bloke behind the lense.

I have a 600D, got mine from Harvey norman with a twin lense kit, a camera bag, cleaning kit and a couple of filters for a smidge over $1400. Wait till they are on special, or haggle harder than I did and you'll get it cheaper.

Or buy your camera body in store (so you get your warranty) and then save some $$$ and buy your lenses, cleaning kits, filters, tripods and bags via a discount website that sounds like fleabay.

The only things I'm looking at buying for my camera are a wide angled lense, a macro lense and a decent bloody flash unit.

Saying all that, do you really need a SLR? I've got some of my own shots blown up into massive frames (cant remember the specs right now) and that was taken by a high zoom point and shoot model camera about 6 years ago. The lumix people make a great point and shoot water proof camera that takes some great shots too and you will get plenty of change out of $1300. You get the added bonus of not having to carry around lenses, filters ect and if you go a water proof camera theres less chance of coming home with a $1300 worthless piece of plastic.

If you want entry level DSLR Canon you can get a 1100D and 2 lenses for $600.00. that will take good pics and be light on the budget. Get a tripod bag, filters, cards and still have heaps of money left.

The entry level DSLRs are heaps lighter.

The main camera that I use now is a tank! pretty heavy and when you chuck a 200mm lens on its really heavy (depending on the brand, I mean like the Canon 70-200f2.8).

If you want to go more of a pro-sumer camera I would suggest the 7D but with lenses is out of your price range. You would be looking at about 2100 to 2500 with 2 ok lenses. The sky is the limit, you could spend gazillions on lenses.

The 600D is a good start and fits the budget. Sorry I dont know Nikon models.

Cheers
Chris

Whilst DSLR's are great... you will need to spend time learning how to use it properly to get good pics.... It's kinda funny seeing all these people with flashy DSLR's and only shoot in auto mode

There are some high end "consumer cameras" now with semi-wide angle and decent zoom (12x up) that take decent pics... some even have near full manual modes...

Dont get me wrong, I've got a Canon DSLR & heap of lenses - which i carted throughout Europe on my last trip, but it was a PIA sometimes carrying all the gear!!..... just some food for thought....

As for Canon or Nikon..... cant really go wrong with either

have you thought about 2nd hand camera with lens?

I bought canon 50D with 24-105L for $1600 they both still in awesome condition.

I think you better of spending more money on lens than camera

You can buy brand new canon 60D from dicksmith for $996 and spend the rest on good wide angle or zoom lens
