how much line do we need?
a simple question: how much line do we actually need on the spool to fish for bream? The furthest I ever cast would be 50-60m, so why would we put over 100m on line in the spool? Occassionally I'll fish from the pier for pinkie with the same reel (daiwa sol 200) I use for bream and I've found I never used more than 1/3 of the line in the spool. Opinions?

I'll use the 125 yards or whatever is on the spool or buy a 300m spool and use half.
Can't say I've ever heard anyone complain they had too much line on their reel but I've heard a few say they didn't have enough. With 125 yards you can always reverse it as it gets old.

100m is HEAPS of braid. if a bream can strip 100 metres of line off you, it deserves its freedom. if it is by-catch, that's a different matter but I'd say 100 metres is more than enough.
BTW when fishing with lures - SPs and hards - there's NO way I would be casting 50-60 metres nor should i need to. if i was spinning metals or being a baito however that's a different story and 100 metres of braid may be on the low side since slices could easily go 50+ metres.

I buy 300 because if you have any drama with the 125 your back to the backing knot in no time and because i top up the backing as i use the top if the braid. In the long run i reckon its cheaper with the 300

the actual amount of line on the reel needed for breaming is 60 max, but for optimal casting distance I fill my reel to the lip

What i do is fill my spool with filler line first (inexpensive fluro/mono/braid) and then put about 100m of my desired braid on. Anyone see anything wrong with this technique?

So long as it is put on properly to prevent slippage then no, i do the same thing, just use cheap mono as backing.

agree with all the above,
only time i ran into trouble was when i shanked a jewie on 4lb in a strong tidal section of the river, 125yrds of 4lb on a 2500 shimano reel. after a steaming downstream run and a few after that i looked down and notice i was down to my backing! a chase followed and i landed it after 10min. only time thats happened and havent even come close to it happening again. I've caught a couple of aussie salmon in the lake here using only 70m of 4lb fluro, so you definitely don't need anywhere near that for bream.

A full spool helps with casting. Agree with others - 2/3 backing and 1/3 braid should do the job in most cases.

. I use minimum 125yd and back up as required, my ci4 has 300yd of 5lb, rather it on the spool than in the packet on the shelf at home

I was bait fishing in swan bay area on the weekend and when I cast I had used up all of my main line which was 80m of power pro 8lb...
![]() errr, i better be putting on 120m of line on my other spool now for this type of fishing. Lucky I had used the albright knot instead of the surgeon knot to line the main line to the backing line
