What daiwa reel for fishing the flats?

G'day guys. Looking for a reel that will be capable of casting light lures a good distance for fishing the flats. At the moment I'm swaying towards the Fuego 1000a. What about the presso? Looking to spend $200ish.

My flats reel is a 2506 Caldia with 3lb flouro - it's great Should be able to pick one up sub-$200 (before postage) if you look around

ETA: Whoops, just looked at both sites I've bought them from and with current exchange they're now about $240... I paid $188 after conversion late last year

Any reel mate ... You don't need a special reel for fishing flats

Id get a caldia from Japan. Even if they are a bit over budget, it'll be worth it in the long run.

+1 caldia 2506, went a bit over my budget (most exp' reel ive bought ) but its silky smooth.
pretty glad my tackle store ran out of stradics as the caldia has a low ratio which i find suits my fishing style well these days...

pretty well converted me from shimano to being full blown daiwa fan, when i can afford i will be trying out an Aird aswell, maybe 3-4000 on a jew/jack stick...

+1 as long as its got a full spool of line 3-6lb braid and a good fast action rod of 6'6" to 7" give or take you will be fine it's the line and rod that helps casting

That's some great advice guys. Gotta a 2500 caldia already so I think I might get the Fuego and load it up with 4lb sunline.

IMO the Fuego is in a completely different league to the Ballistic. I own a Fuego 3000A and a Ballistic 2500SH and the Fuego is a much much much nicer reel. Smoother, lighter and better drag.

I consider the Ballistic/Freams as a replacement for the Tierra (got one of these too), except the Tierra is a better reel than these imo. I make no secret of the fact I love almost all Daiwa's pretty spin reels but I won't buy another Ballistic or Freams. I'd look at a Shimano in a similar price range and I haven't bought a Shimano spin reel in over 5 years!

Question for you all - what would the advantage be in buying a Fuego when you can get a Caldia for the same price/cheaper? I'll admit I haven't had a heck of a lot of experience with the Fuego (a mate has one, only played with it once) but my impressions were the Caldia felt much nicer - am I missing something?

On the line choice - I have two 2506 Caldias, one spooled with 3lb flouro the other with PE0.3/6lb braid. With the same rod and lure I'll get a longer casting distance with the braid (by maybe 5m) but only with a short leader (so the knot doesn't have to pass through the runners). With a longer leader the casting distance is about the same. Now saying that, most of the flats I fish are pretty clean water and I've noticed a significant improvement in strike rate on the flouro over the braid. I think it's maybe because the fish can see the braid easier? Anyways, food for thought
