Shimano Calcutta 101 JDM
Yo Mates,
I'm new to this forum. Seems like most anglers here prefer to use spinning outfits rather than overheads. I've gotten myself a new Calcutta 101 which is very compact and sweet little reel. Hope to share some photos tonight if i've got the chance.

Welcome mate, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the new Calcutta. The normal models already look pretty sweet, hopefully a new Conquest is on its way
. While my spinning gear does the job, I also love to use baitcasters when I can, it's just a little more enjoyable to fish with in my opinion.

Just tested the reel on a recent micro jigging trip. Drag is perfect smooth as baby's butt... Palms beautifully. Just that the line guide is abit in the way, protruding.

Below pic of comparison between my Ryoga 1016L & new Calcutta 101. Size is much more compact.

Picture of the line guide. Kind of poking out like a protruding buck tooth. Would have been better if they can make it smaller.

Pic of the star drag and thumb screw below that allows you easy access to adjusting the brake block from the side plate. The Calcutta D meant for export market does not have this feature.

Upon loosening the thumb screw, the side plate cover will pop out and allows brake block adjustments on the fly.

Hi mate, the new star drag is fine and easy to adjust. But one thing that surprised me was the drag does not completely free up even when you turn the star drag loose all the way. Strange for Shimano standard..

You have to unscrew 2 screws on the handle side to remove the spool. Abit inconvenient, that's the price to pay for something so compact. However the bearing for the cast control knob can be changed easily.

Note that the bearing is black in colour. New ARB stainless steel material? Seems to be specially designed for the new Calcutta due to the tight tolerance.

Will be swapping out the bearings on my spool and cast control knobs for full silicon nitride ceramic bearings. Will try to share some pictures and hopefully a video of the bearings. I'm excited... No more worries about bearing corrosion..
