?? Rods for SP compared with rods for HB
Can anyone in simple and general terms explain the differences between a rod for SPs and one designed for HB lures?
I have received differing info. One source says for SPS the rod should be a little stiffer than a HB rod, reason that for latter is that the softer nature allows the fish to strike the HB lure then the rod recoils hooking the fish. whereas I have told that a rod for HB should be stiffer than one for SPs, the guys who have told me this are informed and competent anglers. But I just want general guidelines as often things can vary. |

Hey Rod
I believe that rod choice is a very personal decision and that all sorts of people require differant performing rods for all sorts of situations.
I spose before i go any further in regards to the subject, "you yourself" should be asking "what do I personally want to feel when i am fishing softs or hards". Everyone on this site would have an opinion on this subject and i believe that a lot of those opinions will have a degree of merit if not be spot on the money. You have to listen and decide what to take away from the answers you get, with a pinch of salt. My opinions, a soft rod for plastics and a firm short rod for hards. I personally hate in a back cast with a hard body rod when it back loads, i like it to feel crisp with little flex or slop. I use a soft rod for plastics because half the time i reckon a bream hits a plastic like a goldfish sucking down a goldfish flake therefore i reckon you need a bit of give as to not pull the lure clean out of it's mouth. Seriously though, my advice , go with what feels good to you i have seen many good anglers use differant gear to me and to great effect. Good Luck Regards Geoff P

Rodme,
Yep I agre with Geoff, he has told you all that can be said about the subject ecept that a stiff rod only need a small flick with a hard body atached, so in a tight spot you can still get a good long and accurate cast. Fish hard Ben |
