Tying to Split Rings
I usually connect my leader to a shad or crank with a uni knot directly to the split ring.
I've always placed the knot on the single part of wire on the ring, my theory being this is the best way I see not to effect the action of the lure. Noticing most people leave the ring on their lures, I'm just interested if you guys do the same or have another idea. |

I tie a uni knot straight to soft plastis, poppers and blades only, regardless of a splitring or not on any hardbody I use a leftys loop knot, cheers Matt.

I remove the splits rings and use Owner lure clips myself. Mainly because I'm a Serial lure changer and I change from blades to bibbed minnows and back and forth often.
I think what you're doing is fine. You're fishing the lures the way they were made to be fished. Only issue I see is that there's a very small chance of the knot sliding into the split and working itself out but it's extremely rare. Edit: 500 Posts I am now a Big Bream

I've had this happen to me twice, and know I remove all split rings.

I always remove the ring & tie my loop straight to the eye. With a bit of practice you get good enough to change a lure in under a minute. With the Halco free swinging style eye I find the smallest snap swivels I can, dice the swivel & replace the ring with just the snap section. Split rings on lure eyes are a waste of time & money IMO.

Ditch the split. Its just another thing that can go wrong. Be careful thouugh, some lures have tie points with sharp edges that wear out a leader quick smart

i tie staight to split rings and it's fine but if you tie a loop knot to a split it can work it's way out. There is no need to tie a loop to a split ring

I used to remove all the split rings, but want to leave them on a lot of lures now to help get them to suspend. I also used to replace all the split rings with Decoy round snaps and although I have never lost a lure I have had a few come undone with a fish on. Thanks a lot for your input guys. |

there is a little clip used in fly fishing called a Fos clip .These work great on the end of your leader if you are a serial lure changer. I use them myself and the are rock slid and very small so they dont effect the action at all

I have used clips but found the little ones a pain and I think its just as easy to use a uni knot. Also had some sneaky bass undo the clips I was using, which was annoying. Once I took all the split rings off may hard bodies. Then fished an ABT as a non-boater. The pro I fished with tied off to split rings and caught more fish on hardbodies than me, so all the split rings went back on. I have seen the fly clips - how do they hold up in salt water?

in my mind, avoid clips.it might not open today, nor tomorrow, nor next week.but it will let go one day ,sure as eggs.and it will probably be on the fish of a life time.
i tie to the split ring on hard bodies but i consider it to be a double edged sword. if you tie to the double part of the ring and the knot slips to the single part of the ring ,well the knot has slack in it and its basically going to unravel. ![]() if you tie to the single part of the ring and the knot slips toward the double part of the ring you will undoudtedly damage your leader on the sharp edge. ![]() so, im not really sure why i tie to the split ring guess im just lazy![]() cheers bomb
