Owner VS Decoy trebles
hey guys!
not sure if this thread has been done but here we go anyway. i have used owner hooks for a fair while now as this is what most people recommend and i have never had many problems with them. in saying this i recently purchased sum cranka lures which come with decoys standard and am pretty impressed. just wondering if anyone has preference for one over the other and why. |

Since i started running Decoy YS25's and Gamakatsu Wide Gape's I seem to have been hooking up more and they still seem sharp after many fish.
The proof will be on some real big fish though as I sometimes used to snap Owners with the pliars getting deeply hooked trebs out of the big ones after they had really crunched the lure. Yellowfin bream seem to play up a lot more in the boat and this is when i find my trebles were often breaking. Mick. |

I went for the decoys because of the wide gape and have never looked back. Super sticky and maintain their sticky-ness after catching quite a few fish, but most of all I haven't had one rust out, they literally never rust!

I'm starting to use Owner ST11's on my lures. These are really fine and ultra sticky. They can bend but I find mainly the front treble bends when both treble are hooked. I caught 9 fish on one set of ST11's, the front ended up a double and was bent back into place about 5 times and was still strong enough to hold onto a 40cm fish! The back treble was still like new.
Only problem is they weigh stuff all and most of your suspending lures will need some lead tape tuning. |

I've used both extensively, having standard owners, ultra light owners and now decoys on my cranka lures and I think I prefer the decoys due to the wide gape, the stickyness and the ability to bend out of shape and not snap off as the UL owners can.

The Decoys are better if you catch alot of good bream. I find the standard owners you will get bent hooks and breakages a fair bit. The Decoys hook up better due to the wider gape and they are super strong.
I do have both but only because at the time of purchase the shop didnt have Decoys. Cheers Chris |

Have just converted to decoys. Will let you know when I get a chance to do abit of fishing. Have caught some good fish on owners previously but in recent times I've been struggling to stay connected to some of the better fish after initial hook-up. Might just be me but have to blame something.

Owners have cost our team good fish in comps, Decoys remain sharp and hold there shape longer than the owners do.
I was using a mx 48 at coota last year, caught 4 fish with the owners hooks before i had to change. Put decoys on and 30 odd fish later there still sharp and unbroken. |

Decoys for me. I made the switch recently, and in my opinion, more inquiries are converted into solid hook-ups.
They also remain sharp for longer. |

Have to agree with most that the Decoys are a superior hook IMO. I Have fished extensively with both and also run Owner light wires for years and I must say that once I went to Decoy's there was no going back!
Coxy and I have now conducted extensive field trials on both brands on some very big fish and we both agree that we get better hit to hookup conversion rates with Decoy's and they hold up better on big fish!... they also hold there point longer when grubbing lures over rock or reef!...or when catching lots of fish on the one set of hooks...In a nutshell we are stocked with the change we made to Decoy's! We are also very impressed with the Japanese OEM manufacturer's hooks that we are now running on the CRANKA Shad and the New CRANKA Vibe soon to be released! We would love to here what you guys think of the hooks we are currently running on the New colour Shads and the New CRANKA Vibes when they finally arrive! Cheers Steersy CRANKA

I'm very interested to see how this goes because I want to try out the decoys on the blades I make.
I have had both types of trebles fail/bend on me on the first fish landed on a new lure then others will last for ages, in a comp down mallacoota I had to change the rear treble (st owners) of one blade after every fish and it was only like a 2.8 bag so deff no monsters! I find it funny how some fish just seem to hammer the hook and others won't do much damage at all Cheers Pete |

decoys all the way:
-wide gape -hook point is bent inwards repels snags and stays sharper for longer -fine gauge but no so fine the bend after catching a good fish -most importantly super super sticky think i covered y I use decoys |

I switched over to decoy Y-S25's at the beginning of summer and my hook up ratio has gone through the roof, especially on surface lures.
