Can this be attemped at home???

Hi all I am have a new boat built as mine was run into. My old motor came out of it a bit worst for wear so I have been looking around for another one.

As luck would have it i was talking to an old bloke and he had a complete boat and trailer he wanted to off load.

I was wondering how hard it is to take the motor off the boat below and install it on the new one. The main thing it the steering controls on mine will be in the middle of the boat not up front as on this boat. will the cable lenght be a worry.

New boat in 4.1m no pics yet as its not built. I only want this other boat for the motor and to raid the stuff out of the boat eg. sounder, radio ect

Any help would be great. Is installing one of these motors trick.

Regards
Matt

Hi,
Yes mate it is possible but there are a few things you need to have sorted before you start.

1) Lifting the engine.
You will need an engine hoist or a block and tackle and some place to mount it, although you probably could lift a 30hp you will not want to try that and line up the bolts holes on the transom whilst hanging on to the engine.
a mate or two may solve the problem also.

2) Mounting height,
make sure the transom heights are compatible i.e. the OB leg is not a short shaft and your new transom is a 25 inch.
Also knowing where the cav plate on your Ob goes in relation to the bottom of the hull will make your life easier.
In most cases level with the bottom of the hull is a good place to start just be careful of your water pressure (tell-tale stream) on the first few runs.

3) The cable length
Not a massive issue as they are not heart attack expensive it can be a pain to match an old helm unit to a new cable sometimes but not the end of the world.
Bias boating’s website has a helpful diagram about estimating cable length if you need.

Other than that it is not too difficult just go slow and make sure you are happy with the way it all fits up as you are talking about steerage and propulsion if one were to fail you can imagine the results.

Thanks for the reply I will give it a go. The bloke building my boat will help get it set right for heights and what not.

I will have a look at bias for the cable lengths

Once again thanks for taking the time to help

There is companies around who make custom cables too if you get stuck with the cable side of things.
