Travel rods

looking for a direction to look in, some recommendations if possible.

Will find myself up Karratha and Exmouth way on a regular basis for work, and thought I might pack a rod to have a flick on occasion. Figure a baitcaster about 6.5' long would be the go, mainly because I have the reels already and that length would suit shore fishing. 3- 4Kg line I figure. May pack a light spin rod as well.

Thinking a 4 piece would be good, packed in a small tube in my bag.

Any ideas? Budget open at this stage.

For up there you want a 3-4kg setup and a 7-9kg setup. Baitcasters arent really that suitable. Spin is the go.

Look at the nitro travel series of rods. Small enough to fit inside a suitcase. You cant carry rods on as hand luggage anymore so everything needs to fit inside a suitcase.

Reason I say baitcasters is that I have a few lying around and in need of some use. To be honest, I prefer them, but I do hear you that spins are good up there. Will consider.

If you look at a spin option, check out the LOX rods. Ive got a LOX 7655 and it goes pretty well. 7'6 5kg and 5 piece. Comes with a soft cloth wrap and hard case for fitting in a suitcase. They are about half the price of a Nitro with about the same specs.

cool, thanks guys, will check them all out. I'll have an open mind about the spin option, but since I already have the reals it will be hard to justify

OK, impulse bought (read paid too much as well ) a Tcurve Revolution Travel 703 SW, a well constructed 7' rod, good for 4Kg line (rated 5-10kg by factory). 3 piece, but it breaks down reasonably well I thought. 4 pice would have been more ideal, but options seem to be a little more limited. Matched it with a Stradic 4000FJ, which seemed to suit the rod well.

Anyway, was up Karratha way over the weekend and had a flick with it around point samson. Slowish morning on a rising tide, but still managed to bag a few small trevally, and one decent (2-3Kg) mangrove jack over rocks. Handled it all very well. Have no doubts that the outfit will handle bigger prey, and hopefully will in future

Seriously I have over 50 rods. I have only ever had two rods break on me & both of them have been 2 piece travel rods. Do yourself a favour & forget about taking one up on the trip. Just go to the TackleWorld there & buy a new one for under $100 & have a chat to the local guy at the same time then give it to some deserving soul on your way out. Much less hassle & you may get some valueable tips by going to the local store. Just my opinion mate but really travel rods suck!

lol, I used to think like that, but after seeing how much crap 2 and 3 piece flyrods take and still come up good I figure that surely a 3 piece spin rod can still do the job well. We shall see

Thats an interesting option and worth considering I suppose.

But as a fly fisherman as well as a spin fisherman I use 4 piece fly rods all the time (Ok not as much as I'd like and I've done more spin fishing lately anyways). The way the build multipiece rods these day is great.
I have had one fly rod break on me that I can blame on the ferrule, but the main problem was me not checking it. I hadn't waxed the joint like I normally do and the top section came partially off part way through the cast and then snapped 1cm off the second section. Thats the only issue I've had with multipiece rods.
