structure questions??

was just wondering say your fishing mored boats and jettys etc how far away from the structure do you fish? i havnt had much success, but a few times i have gone for a long cast getting nice and tight into the strike zone and got fish im thinking im fishing a little to close to the boats and jettys!! so if anyone could help me out with this it would be very helpful! cheers beechey

no such thing as to close really,unless your getting flack from a boat your fishing under owner. i always get more hookups as the lure transitions from the shaded water to the water in the sunlight. same goes for night time and jetty lights etc. closer you go the longer its in the zone for shy fish to see/be attracted to IMO

I'd rather fall half a meter short of a boat hull then making a hard cast into the hull with a jighead going wack and scaring the fish off...

I think water clarity plays a part too. You can get a lot closer to structure in dirtier water, and try and make sure you're fishing the shaded side of boats, jetties, etc.

You can usually get in fairly close to this type of structure depending on water clarity and depth. Target the shady side of boats and jetties. Always a good idea to get your lure in nice and tight to the structure but you don't want to be hitting boats with your lures though as you will probably spook fish and piss of the owners.No need for super long casts in this environment as a general rule.

Also pay attention to the wind/current. No need to be smacking your lure into the side of a pontoon or boat when you can place your lure into the wind/current and let it take your lure under the structure as stealthily as possible.

I use a kayak and can practically drop the lure ontop of the fish and watch them eat it. I can generally go as close as I wish, even in clear water

Watch a classic catch from Kris Hickson in round 4or5 of AFC, he is up cowan creek (I think) and he may as well be patting one of the bream he pulls out of some sticks. Cowan creek is clear as so that puts a questions on the water clarity comments. I am a average distance form the boats and structure so you can make every cast perfect when throwing plastics. The only time you should be making long cast is when you cant pull fish. Long casts generally equal poor acuracy when it comes to cosistancy.

I have cought big bream off hulls by sitting at the front of a boat nearly touching, only 1m away and casting down the side with crank baits. In very clean water. Great way to catch bream.

I have heard that Steve Morgan sometimes cranks with his nose up against structure, Maybe he could clarify. He would be able to answer this question better than anyone, probably the best structure breamer in the country.

Whilst i agree entirely with almost all of your post i don't quite agree with the water clarity comment. All depends on location, how agressive the fish are on a particular day, some days and places they will spook very easily other times not. A lot of the places i fish you would be hard pressed catching many in the clear stuff if your sitting on top of them although some days they don't seem to notice at all.

Im not sure you read my post correctly, I didnt mean you can always catch them in clean water up close, Im just saying it does happen.

I totally agree with you. Thats what bream fishing is all about, they will do something different every day sometimes.

I have chucked a plastic at boats one day and they hear it hit the hull and race over and eat it. the next day they might run off when they hear the lure hit the hull and you need to cast it just in front and try not to hit the hull.


The thing is, you need to work this out on the day, if you keep doing the exact same thing and your not catching fish on that particular day, your probably not going to catch fish until you change. The next day your old style may work but the next day is not today

The regular method is just comfortable casting distance. Then try other things.
