[QUOTE=frenchy;358489]hey boys
i have a couple of questions what is a leader for ? For joining your main line to your lure what line is best for a leader? Flurocarbon, excellent abrasian resistance what strength compared to your main line? Depends, starting off probaly 6lb. Go down for a challange or use in crystal clear water or go up if snaggy or dirty water. and whats the best way to connect your main line and leader? Double uni knot or a 5 turn surgeon....very simple indeed. thanks

It's a different chemical compound to either Mono or braid.
Fluro is almost invisible under water (scientifically proven), mono is next on the list followed by braid in the visibility stakes. Fluro generally sinks, which is good for some lures but not for others, I wouldn't worry about it at the moment, fluro is a great allrounder in reality. Generally a leader is used to make the working end of your line (the bit with the lure) seem to be less visible to fish and help protect your main line from snags.

berkley vanish in 6lb, and Sunline rock FC in 3,4lb and I cant remember what the name of the 8 and 10lb I use.
Berkley vanish I think its not a bad leader for the price, most people seem to dislike it for some reason?

Well, I have to differ on this subject.
A leader is to hide your main line...be it braid. If you wish to run mono or fluro all the way though, a leader should not be needed. Mono is my choice of leader. 9lb for surface. 6lb for cranks and sub surface lures. |

yeah i think vanish is a bit thick, fammel is excellent leader, thinner, stronger and you get a 100m spool. Good luck starting out mate.

I think a rod length is good for a general rule, but certainly mine gets longer/shorter depending on water clarity.

Hi frenchy
Hope this link is of some use to you. When I first started, I found it extremely helpful. http://www.breammaster.com/onlinestore/onlinestore.htm At the top of the page, look at "getting started", "lures" and "softplastics". I am sure you will find it as helpful as I did. Happy fishin! Cheers, BD
