Reel Sizes

Hi All,

I was hoping that someone could shed some light on reel sizes. I am a Shimano man and am looking at trying out some Daiwa reels, specifically a Daiwa Gekkabijin MX 2004 or a Emeraldas INF 2506. I am just not sure of the sizes in comparison to the Shimano sizes.

I am looking to buy off Rayannes so I can't actually have a feel.

If someone could shed some light on each that would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

A 2500 Daiwa is pretty close to a Shimano 3000.

2506 has a shallow spool though. I can't remember exactly how it goes but they are designed to hold a top shot spool of 100yds-ish of 6lb I believe, so you don't have backing. I can't remember whether it is braid or mono though.

Likewise the 2004 is shallow spool designed to hold a 100ish yds of of 4lb.

A Daiwa 2506, 2508 and 2500 are an identical reel body with different capacity spools.

I completely disagree with the whole 2000 daiwa = 2500 shimano thing..

I just picked up a couple of Luvias DA's (2000 and 2500). I can comfortably say that the Luvias 2500 *may* hold more line than my symetre 2500, but overall size wise the Luvias no bigger, perhaps even smaller, in the body at least.

My Steez 2004 and Luvias 2000 are both noticeably smaller than the Shimano 2500's I have owned. (symetres and Stradics).

Put it this way.. I read conflicting reports that a 2500 Daiwa may be overkill for breaming. They're actually quite compact for the amount of line they hold. Not too small at all.

In terms of actual sizes, a 2500 Shimano is in between 2000 and 2500 Daiwa. Mainly because the design of the body is more compact than the Daiwas.
The spool diameter of a Shimano 2500 is slightly smaller than the Daiwa 2500, and I am pretty sure a 2500 shimano holds slightly less line than a 2500 Daiwa.

Your right they aren't the same size. But IMO a 2500 shimano is closer to a 2000 daiwa (the daiwa is slightly smaller) then to the 2500 daiwa (the daiwa is larger). I think the luvias body design is slightly smaller than other daiwa's of the same number size.
My advantage 2500's are perfectly usable for breaming, but being a heavier larger reel they sit better on a rod with more grunt than a bream wand. My certate 2500r is lighter but still doesn't sit well on a 842-2 (feels like a canon on a kayak). The advantage is significantly better, but I currently use a stradic 1000 on the 842-2. A mate uses a Stradic 2500 Ci4 and it feels great as well (but its roughly the weight of my stradic 1000's). I think it a function of weight rather than size. So a 2500 steez or exist or luvias which are the lighter weight daiwa reels will work for breaming quite well. as a bonus having some extra line capacity as well (might be more a bonus for the company that sells you the line, as with breaming not a lot of sees the water).
