St.Croix SCV

I am looking to build a custom on a St.Criox SCV blank. Has anybody used an SCV blank or a St.Croix rod with the SCV blank? I hear that they are on par with the Loomis GLX's, but I'm not so sure. Any advice would be great.

Cheers,

Daiwafreak

I believe SCV is SC5 where V is the roman numeral for 5. You will find SCIII (SC3), SCIV (SC4) and their highest modulus is SCV (SC5). I haven't really used them so no first hand experience but I think the Legend Elite is either SCIII (less likely) or SCIV (more likely). After all that, what really matters is how it feels to you. If you can get an SCV for a good price, give it a go I say, and let us know what you think about them in comparison to the GLX.

Have built on a few SC V blanks now and they are great, i prefer them to the loomis. Make sure you get the latest SC V that have the nano resins in them as they are thinner walled again (slightly) but far more durable.

Cheers guys. Looking at the cost of the St.Croix blanks compared to the Loomis or NFC blanks, why are the Loomis and NFC blanks so expensive? A 'clearout' loomis IMX would set me back nearly $300, while a St.Croix SCV would be well under $200. Can the SCV blanks really be compared with the GLX?

oooops stoopid me i misread SCV as in SC5 lol... good pickup CHUNQX
but yeah the legend elite from memory is SC5 and is a great blank! very fast, crisp and loads of power. also very light and durable.
my legend elite unfortunately picked the wrong fight when it took on my ute's door and had a tiSic guide crushed but the blank was fine... just replaced one guide.
and oh, i almost killed my friend for trying to close the door!

Looks like its your turn to correct me. The Legend Elite is SC5 but may be more than just SC5. On their website it says the legend elite is made up from SCV and SCVI (SC6!). Now, I'm curious.

This is the same with the SCV blanks, they use a little SCVI graphite in the rod. The SCVI is too high modulus (62million) to be used on it's own, so they use it with SCV graphite to improve the performance of the rod.

With the NSi nano resin technology, what exactly is it? Is it the same concept as the Gloomis NRX rods? And if so, does that mean that the SCV with NSi technology can be compared to a Gloomis NRX? Seems like it, the whole point of the nano resin was the decrease the rods weight while making it just as powerful. It is also used to make the blank more sensitive and to increase the strength, which was a big problem with high modulus graphite rods such as the GLX.

I've built SCIV fly rods and they are good. I was going to build the SCV Dropshot Bass and right at the last minute, I changed my mind and ended up getting 2 MHX blanks instead. They are fantastic blanks but I'm still going to try out a St Crois SCV one day.......Maybe next order........

ahhhhhhh st croix......... very sweet rods that are a little underated IMO.
i know i love my st. croix avid, legend elite, surf legend.
i know this will raise a few eyebrows when i say this but "IN MY OPINION" i feel as though the legend elite's blank (the old SCV) was much more responsive and detect movements better than the GLX. i have used both blanks and tend to come back to the SCV.
i have not got the new SCV1/2 blanks so i cant tell but i would say that it is somewhere in the same region as the NRX.
anyway, rods that are that high in quality are all very very good and does not differ much in terms of sensitivity. the only remaining issue is the presentation of the product (OR the bling) factor, in which case the megabass wins hands down! hahaha.
good luck with your quest guys.

Just to note,

The "Loomis" blank now, is not the same blanks of yester year. If you're looking at a genuine Gary Loomis Blank, then you're needing to go to North Fork Composites which was a new business set up by Gary Loomis and a very select team. These blanks are brilliant.

The St Croix SC V blanks are up there with being some of the best premium blanks money can buy. And yes, as already mentioned, the "V" is the same as "5".

Enjoy building your rod.
