Pink Grubbing

Hi all,

I bought some Ecogear Grass Minnows in the pink colour (thanks to fishin.com.au ). I'm keen to give pink grubbing for bream and possibly whiting a try - can anyone recommend a worm hook size for this? These are the "M" size grass minnows which i think are 2.5 inch.

If you can get them then Decoy KG Worm 17 Size 2 and 1 are the go but ive been using gamakatsu worm hooks or squidgy resin head jigs and you just cut a little bit off the head of the grass minnow. Been having some great topwater sessions around the islands in the broadwater lately.

hey warren, what sized gamakatsu hooks are you using?
If i can't find any worm hooks i'll try the resin heads.

you'll figure it out if you really think about it but it's hard to get to stay upright on the drop.

otherwise size 1 or 2 gammas

i ended up getting squidgy resin heads as the tacklestore i went to only had big worm hooks. i might give these a go but still try and find some worm hooks to suit the size of these plastics.

We fish them with 1/40th and 1/32nd HWS hooks as well. 90 degree aberdeens are also good. You can rig them as a keel to stop them spinning - heaps of fun.

i just took the resin hooks out of the pack... they're not that great. The hooks are pretty thick and not that sharp :S
Oh well, i'll see how they go.

So i gave the pink grubbing technique a go this morning and wow!

Two days ago i bought a few Gamakatsu G Lock and Decoy Worm hooks. I rigged up a few of the Grass Minnows with the new hooks and off i went this morning.
I got to the section i wanted to fish (LB btw) at about 5.30 am and went to an area to practice casting. I've never really had much experience casting weightless plastic lures but thanks to the Lox Yoshi, it seemed easier than what i had expected. After a few more casts i slowly waded to a spot that was deeper and contained a fair bit of grass. I'm not very confident when fishing plastics, let alone plastics without scent so i wasn't expecting much.
The first cast goes out. As soon as the grub hit the water, i flipped the bail, lifted the tip and slowly started to retrieve. I started to put a bit of action into the lure by giving the rod small, fast, constant flicks. No more than 5 second into the retrieve there were a few splashes behind the lure. No more than 2 seconds from the splashes, something engulfed the lure and took off. I set the hook and was fighting the fishing for about a minute before i could see the silver flashes a few metres infront of where i was standing. Each time i brought it in, it would take off and take several meters of line with it. Unfortunately the 4lb leader couldn't take much more and snapped.
This happened to me 4 times during todays session. By the fifth fish, the sun was well and truely up and the surface action had gone down.
Overall it was a very good start to pink grubbing - so good that i'm planning to go tomorrow morning as well!

Sounds like you had a great days fishing Tomorrow morning you might have to up your leader size and maybe even consider using mono as flouro carbon sinks you might find it nhas an undesirable effect on the action of your grub?

The action was good with the 4lb but I'll go to 6 tomorrow. I won't have time between now and then to get mono so fluro will have to do.

Saw a picture of Kris Hickson using the pink grub with a similar hook but it was still very unclear on how the plastic was set up.

I went again this morning before the sun was up. It was fairly dark but i started to flick the grubs out and slowly work them across the surface. Almost straight away i was getting pretty solid strikes on the surface. Some happening only 2 - 3 meters from where i was standing. It's a bit scary when that happens in the dark
I had a lot more surface strikes than yesterday but didn't manage to hook any up. Once the sun was up i switched to a micro vibe. First cast caught a bream around 22cm. After he went back into the water i tried a few more casts then called it a day.

Don't be fooled into thinking that pink grubbing is only an early morning thing. I pulled this fish and quite a few more during a hot bite in the middle of the afternoon yesterday. Very exciting way to fish..

i might have to give it a go during the day :P
I missed so many strikes yesterday - i've order some W Hooks to try and rig them as stingers somehow.... i'm thinking of threading the head of the grub onto the worm hook, trying to slide the W hook on, then finish threading the rest of the grub.
