is it worth the 1000 bucks
i was wondering if say a $1000 spin reel like a certate or a stella has much difference to a reel like a sol or a twin power, is there a huge difference in winding smoothness and drag smoothness? Can you pick it up and instantly feel difference? And wat is it that makes up that $700 gap there? Cheers

And the difference in coin is only worth it if you arent totally happy with what you have already. You wont catch more fish, you wont drop less fish, and you wont bust off more fish by using a certate over a sol. Last edited by Emo; 14-01-2011 at 08:59 AM. |

yeah 400 to 500 buck usually but no IMO a Luvias, Heartland or sol is a better option budget wise. I didn't think the certate was any smoother.
If cash isn't a problem go for it! |

I think you will find Certate breaming size reels aren't $1000, more like $450 - $550, and Stellas are around the $800 - $900 mark. Anyway its all to do with the components. The Certates and Stellas have way better lightweight metals and gearing, and the drags are silky smooth. Compared to other reels you may not see much visual difference but its whats inside that makes you pay the extra $. I have a Sol and a Certate and believe me theres a major difference imo.

When in reality, its hard to comprehend that people are paying for 1 reel against 3. IMO there is no strong differents. It seems that its just the little things that get people attention, Smoothness, weight reduction, etc. Campare a stradic to something like a Certate. Sure there are noticable differents but to say a Certate is 3 times better is hardly negotiable. People will beg to argue, but I was once in the same line of thought. That the more I spend the better I get.... The way I see it, when it comes down to the point. It's just a reel, not a fashion toy. Just fish and be thankful that you're not at work! ![]() ![]() That's my 2 cents. |

A novice with a stella and a loomis will not catch as many fish as a steve morgan with a kmart rod and reel... buy reasonable gear but dont go crazy and buy gear that you DONT need....for the price of one stella and one loomis you can get 2 reasonable setups with line and maybe a couple lures and go do a comp ....

what i think is expensive gear wont catch more fish but will help to aide it but dont get me wrong u dont need certates or stellas or anything but its more of a comfort thing and makes fishing more enjoyable for me and also the bragging rights :P

A couple of my lighter outfits
Steez 2004, Berkley pro tactic 2-4kg Symetre 2500, Pflueger Asaro 2-4kg Do I think the Steez is worth 5x as much as the Symetre? Nope, not at all... Do I use the Symetre as much as the Steez? Nearly... Which would I part with first if I was forced to chuck one under a train? Symetre... Why? The steez is lighter, more free spinning and the drag is nice and loud. It isn't much smoother though, in my opinion. Note: I think how smooth a reel is and how free spinning it is are two different things which I honestly think are often confused.

for me i prefer using good gear, having said that i reckon using gear that is going to do the job you need is more important than what brand the rod/reel is. realistically for breaming i reckon spending 1k on a reel is w@nk factor, however spending that same 1k on a specialist rod will likely put more fish in the net/well/on the plate. the only time high end reels offer any reel benefit is when your fishing really really light(think 2lb fluoro) and the drag needs to be perfect. just my opinion, im sure there are more experienced fishos out there who will disagree.

I own mid-range gear, I have 5 rods which does me just fine for the occiasional comp and a lot of social fishing...they range from an ultralight flats combo, through to a 12lb outfit for fishing racks. Each combo set me back around the $400 mark. I have a 1000 symettre matched with 3lb fluro and it works fine - I've used certates matched with a loomis, a fireblood combo and they are nice set ups - but worth the extra $$$. I don't think so. The only part of the equation where I think top end gear may equal more fish in the livewell is that it may give you confidence to fish better....I'd personally be worried that my $1000 reel will end up in the drink...

i'm by no means a gun fisherman, probably even below average, but i use top end tackle for a couple of reasons.
the first is a certain confidence factor that i get. if i dont catch anything then i know its me and not the gear thats letting me down ![]() secondly, after spending so much coin on the gear, i look after it a lot more and try to use it as often as i can. just my thoughts. i have nothing against cheaper models, and am by no means snobbing them. imho buy what you can afford, use it, appreciate it and look after it ![]() cheers

I have owned sol's and other similar reels in the past however now that I own a 1000 Stella n a 2004 certate I can definatley say that whilst they don't guarantee you will catch fish you definatley feel more confident in landing that kicker fish when you hook it and they are also fantastic reels to fish with super smooth n the drags are amazing

Don't get me wroung I bought a combo for $15 (Jarvis Walker toocool) at Kmart the current one I am using. I don't regret buying it because that was only one I could afford at the time even though it is a cheap combo it fits my bill. Just buy a reel/rod that suits you and affordable that you consider is worth it/good.
Cheers
