Ballistol oil

Hi there people

I have been told that Ballistol oil
is a great product for fishing gear.

Is there a right or wrong way to use it
on your reels ?

Thanks Heaps

Yep,

Don't hold a lighter in front of it when you spray it on your reel.

Best way to use it is not to.

It can be used a temporary lubricant eg to stop a squeak in a handle or such but it shouldn't be used as a replacement for the correct sort of lube. Trouble is it will emulsify with water and can hence hold rubbish in suspension.

You'll read that its good for quietening noisy bearings but generally a noisy bearing is stuffed and should be replaced.

There's nothing wrong with it as a product but beings designed for firearms its not ideal for fishing gear.

I've heard that Ballistol is good for boat locks. Keeps them working and prevents corrosion. Haven't tried myself though.

I wouldn't be using it on any of my reels. Only the stuff recommended by manufacturer.

Cheers

I use INOX on my reels and have for many years no problems to date and the reels feel as good as they day I bought them.

I've had Ballistol quite literally bring seized reels back to life.

Never had any issues with it, and I use it internally in all my reels.

Certain reel brands (generally not the high end stuff) come from factory so overloaded with grease it is ridiculous, designed for the once a year angler and to last the '5 year warranty' period.

I have found Ballistol to be a very good remedy to this situation, but the warning is once the bucket of grease is removed more regular maintenence is a must.

Ballistol is an oil made from aniseed root, it's non-toxic and I've found when I spray it on my lure trebles the fish seem to bite down harder - I know Dizzy Borg uses aniseed oil in one of his lure scents so maybe there's something in my theory..

It does tend to emulsify a bit but I've sprayed reels, braid, boat, everything with it and nothing has broken or rusted so far - touch wood!
